'Embrace the Lord's Gift of Repentance'
Elder Jorge M. Alvarado
"Brothers and sisters, surely we will make mistakes in our lives along the way. But please remember that, as Elder Gerrit W. Gong has taught: 'Our Savior's Atonement is infinite and eternal. Each of us strays and falls short. We may, for a time, lose our way. God lovingly assures us that no matter where we are or what we have done, there is no point of no return. He waits ready to embrace us.'"

The first complete day without diet soda. I was tired all day. I alternated between water and Crush pineapple powder. James made me some hot chocolate this evening. He also made cinnamon rolls this afternoon, did the dishes, and put the sheets on the beds upstairs and down in the basement. He made a fire when I said I was cold. I can't imagine anyone treating me any better. He is my sweetheart!

I have my lesson this week and hopefully will spend the time I need to be prepared, plus make my handouts.

James and I signed Sheri's birthday card this morning, forgetting that today is a holiday and the mail doesn't go out. I will mail it tomorrow. I can't believe our baby girl is going to be 50.

Tom slept most of the day in the house. I love watching him sleep.
Giving up diet soda is going to be more difficult that I thought. Elder Christofferson's talk, "Burying Our Weapons of Rebellion" has encouraged me to make this decision as part of my stewardship to take better care of my body.

'The Man Who Communed with Jehovah'
Elder Kyle S. McKay
"What was said of John the Baptist might also be said of Joseph Smith: 'There was a man sent from God, whose name was Joseph....He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light,' 'that all men through him might believe.'"

Happy Sabbath! At the last minute James decided he needed a haircut so out came the clippers and scissors. I didn't a pretty good hurried job if I do say so myself.

On the way to church this morning a coyote crossed our path and went from Jeff's property to ours. He's out on the prowl. I am glad we left Tom asleep in the house.

It was a rather nice day today. Sunny and no wind. Collin, the guy from Waypoint and the two elders sat in our second row side seats. I like it over there because I can always see the speaker and those on the stand. We sat in the middle down a couple of rows and I had a difficult time seeing.

Lindsay Shaw, a single sister in our ward who was just called to be the stake Relief Society secretary, was the first speaker. She spoke on the Sermon on the Mount.
1. Blessed are the poor in Spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
When we are poor in Spirit, we are humble and teachable.
2. Blessed are they that mourn for they shall be comforted. Lindsay used the example of Joseph Smith in Liberty jail.
3. Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth. Someone who is meek is gentle, forgiving, or benevolent.
4. Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled with the Holy Ghost. Being filled with the Holy Ghost requires spiritual labor.
5. Blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy. To be merciful is to show compassion, grace, kindness and love.
6. Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God.
7. Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the children of God.
8. Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
9. Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

Brother Prestwich from the high council was the concluding speaker
How to remove contention from our lives. Do I love the person more than I want to be right? Brother Prestwich has a brother who is bipolar and can be quite contentious. Each family member was assigned a day of the week to call and talk to this brother. When it was Brother Prestwich's turn he said he learned just to listen, not contend. I wanted to be supportive, not tell him what to do. We all need grace in our lives. We can also have peace when we resolve conflicts with others. We can feel joy and peace as we attend the temple. President Nelson said more peacemakers are needed.

Jimmy Applegate taught Gospel Doctrine today. The discussion was on D&C 10-11 so we talked about Martin Harris and Hyrum Smith. Was Martin Harris a wicked man? He acted wickedly when he went against what the Lord wanted. He did repent and was called to be one of the three witnesses to the Book of Mormon.

What can we learn from Hyrum's obedience to the Lord's command to seek His word? (11:21).

President M. Russell Ballard noted: "Hyrum's life is a witness to his obedience to this instruction. To the very last day of his life, he devoted himself to obtaining the word through study of the scriptures. In Carthage Jail, he read and commented on extracts from the Book of Mormon. The scriptures were obviously part of Hyrum's being, and he turned to them during times when he needed comfort and strength the most.

"Just think of the spiritual strength we could gain in our lives and how much more effective we would be as teachers, missionaries, and friends if we studied the scriptures regularly. I am sure we, like Hyrum, will be able to endure our greatest trials if we search the word of God as he did." ("Hyrum Smith," 79).

Neither Catherine nor Janna were here today. I sent Janna's valentine home with Willy. I told Kerri to tell her mom that I missed her today. Kerri thanked me for our visit the other day and said how much it means to her mom to have people come and visit.

As we turned down our lane and were coming up the hill Chuck's truck was stopped on the rode and both doors were open. They had pulled an animal carcass off the road. James went out to look at it and said it was of a deer. The carcass was stripped clean of any meat. James said maybe a wolf had killed the deer and then the coyote finished cleaning the carcass. It is rather disgusting to me. Hopefully we will not just pull this carcass off the road but get it completely out of sight. Sorry, no pictures.

We had enchiladas, rice, and beans for lunch. I also had a piece of strawberry poke cake. James had Ben & Jerry non-dairy ice cream.

After lunch we took naps, along with Tom.

When we got up from our naps I decided to make a notebook with favorite scriptures from the Doctrine & Covenants. James had a couple of ministering interviews today. After church he had one with Cope Reynolds and now he asked Pierce Goodman to come over so he could have one with him. Both of these brothers are outstanding ministers. They check on their families weekly. Pierce put a roof on the house of one of the sisters he visits. Wouldn't it be great of all ministering brothers were like these two.

This evening I caught up on my blog posts and sent my missionary letter to Joshua. It's Monday evening and I still haven't heard back from him.

I looked out the outside door of our bedroom to see if Tom wanted in and I saw this:

We sort of ignored him so he went over to
Jeff & Susan Crane's.

I guess Jared Ammon was needed at work so he won't be coming tomorrow. James originally had a CT Scan tomorrow but it may have been cancelled when he had one on the 8th. I will have to call in the morning.

"Let us not defend ourselves from the good that God desires to bless us with. From the love and mercy that He desires us to feel. From the light and knowledge He desires to bestow upon us. From the healing that He knows we so readily need. From the deeper covenant relationship He intends for all His sons and daughters."

Snow on the ground and in the trees this morning, probably just a little under 2 inches. Tom wants to go out. I wonder why.

I am exhausted from yesterday. I rested most of the morning. We are supposed to feed the missionaries tonight. Now we have elders instead of sisters so I had James call. They said they would be here tonight at 6 pm if that was okay.

I manage to get myself into the kitchen around 1 o'clock this afternoon. James went in to town to pick up rice and beans from LaCasita. I am making Lois's traditional enchilada casserole with a few of my own adaptations. It took me all afternoon to get everything ready.

We had enchiladas, rice, beans, guacamole, chips and salsa, lettuce, and a strawberry poke cake for dessert. Elder Candari is from Oahu, Hawaii and Elder Flores who is originally from Honduras now lives in Provo, Utah.

I was a little disappointed that neither elder touched the rice or beans. What a bust. I thought for sure Elder Flores from Honduras would go for the beans. Go figure.

The elders are only teaching one person in our area and he is someone who lives at the Waypoint Addiction Recovery center. Elder Flores is very quiet, but we managed to get him to say a few things and we ended up having a nice visit. Elder Candari shared a scripture and Elder Flores said a prayer before they left.

Elder Candari and Elder Flores

James did the dishes and I put the food away. I then worked on my blog and played "Pinky" with Tom. My right arm is beginning to throb.

We got some disturbing news about John Wilhelm this evening. He didn't feel well so he went to the ER and was air-evacked to the a hospital somewhere in the valley. He had to have quadruple bypass surgery. John is probably in his early to mid 50's and has six kids who still lives at home. Four are adults and have moved out.
I love his wife Sandra. We are praying for them. Trenda is their oldest daughter.

Rosie Lauritzen left me a Valentine on the front porch and a couple of cookies. She is so thoughtful and sweet.

A lazy day for Tom

'Holiness to the Lord in Everyday Life'
Elder Gerrit W. Gong
"Holiness to the Lord in everyday life looks like a young returning missionary who learned to let God prevail in his life. Earlier, when asked to bless someone who was very sick, this missionary said, "I have faith; I will bless him to recover. Yet," the returning missionary says, "I learned in that moment to pray not for what I wanted but for what the Lord knew the person needed. I blessed the brother with peace and comfort. He later passed away peacefully."

Happy Valentine's Day! I gave James a sweet card and some candy this morning as an indication of my love for him. In return he wrote me a sweet note and invited me to go to lunch with him. We decided to try the new restaurant where Persnikkity's use to be. It's called "The Taco and I." They have Nackard Pepsi. It that something we should be excited about? I don't know.

It was raining when we drove into Show Low. We arrived at The Taco and I at 11:10, about ten minutes after it opened. There was one or two customers inside. We looked at the menu, which was quite small. The only tacos listed were street tacos. I ordered 3 Barbacoa beef tacos and James ordered a Barbacoa beef burro. They had a salsa bar but it was sparse. The tacos and the burro were very plain, no cheese, and not much seasoning on the meat. I ate on taco and the meat from another and took home one taco and a tortilla with beans.
We decided we probably wouldn't be back any time soon. I saw no one drinking Pepsi but three guys had Coca Cola in bottles. Still don't know what Nackard Pepsi is.

My teeny, tiny street tacos

We got gas at Circle K and then went to Walmart. We picked up a check from the Landings at the post office which I can deposit at home. We brought cash with us to deposit in the bank so I could pay my credit card, but now we don't have too because of this check. That's a relief because we like to have a nice cash reserve. James picked up a couple of my prescriptions he put on auto-order. I don't need them right now and I don't like auto-order but James did it, so I guess it's okay. I got some mild Italian sausage to add to the baked ziti I'm making for tonight's RS "Little Italy" dinner.

When we got home I took a short nap before starting to prepare the baked ziti I signed up for, for tonight's Relief Society dinner. I am using the recipe the Relief Society gave out instead of my own. I wished I had used mine instead. It took around three hours to make and it was difficult to remove all of the grease from the sausage.

When we left for the dinner it was snowing like crazy outside. I am grateful! James doesn't like the snow as much as I do, he would rather have rain.

Lynda Finnell is our RS activities leader and does a good job decorating and planning. We sat by Catherine Halcomb, Ellen and Dave Kostusiak, and a woman I didn't know named Jesse. I sat in the chair next to Catherine, James didn't sit down but was visiting with someone at another table when Paula Johnson came in and sat in the chair by Jesse. It happened so quickly I didn't know what to say. Catherine suggested we set up another place for James. Ellen got a chair, and table settings. There is plenty of room and it worked out fine.

My friend Michelle Beckham was at the dinner with Ken Martin. I went over and spoke with her and asked when her knee surgery is scheduled. She said it was on Monday. I told her I would pray for her.

Jimmy Applegate was our waiter. We did not have to stand in line to get our food, each table had their own waiter, dressed in black pants, white shirts and black bow ties. We started with salad and bread, both were delicious. For the main dish we could choose lasagna, baked ziti, or alfredo either with chicken or beef. They ran out of the chicken and Catherine got the beef, which she did not like.

I ordered the baked ziti but didn't eat all of it. I'm not sure if it was mine or not, but it was too greasy. James did eat all of his.

For dessert we could order cheesecake with strawberries, or chocolate cake. I ordered the cheesecake and so did James. Catherine ordered the chocolate cake, and loved it.

Here is a picture of Lynda Finnell and her husband John. John was a server.

This mural was set up in the cultural hall where you could get your
picture taken. No picture for us.

Jimmy was a great waiter and we enjoyed the company at our table. Kerri was one of the waiters and I think she serves on the RS committee. I asked if we could take her mom home since she had to stay late. She was grateful.

It was still snowing outside as we drove Catherine home. James walked her up to the door. I was glad to see her home safely.

Back home I threw away all of the leftover ziti and the uncooked sausage in the refrigerator. It was just too greasy. Next time I'm using my recipe that I got from Marci Coombs.

I did the dishes that were left, worked on my blog for awhile and then watched "The Way Home." James came in and watched it with me. The show is just getting to convulted, too much time travel.

"As we strive to be true to every covenant we have entered into and live 'by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God,' we will be protected against falling victim to the sins and errors of the world - errors of philosophy and doctrine that would lead us away from those most precious pearls."

James cancels his trip to the valley because he can't get the trailer brake lights to work. He needs to get them fixed but in the meantime, he may borrow Chuck's trailer to take the Razr down to Erik.

Things are supposed to get colder here in the next few days along with either snow or rain. Let's hope so. James gives me a weather report every morning.

Jared Ammon texted and asked if Grampa could use any help Monday - Wednesday of next week. He said he could, but please check the weather first. Nice of Jared to volunteer to help.

I cancelled two online orders I made back at the beginning of January. One was for pillows and pillow cases and the other for a bra. The pillows had three charges. Chase accepted the first two but on the third I have to fill out paperwork. I contacted the bra company and asked for a refund. If that don't give it soon I will contact the bank on that charge too.

The sun was shining this afternoon when Kathy Crane and I made our visits, but the wind was blowing and the later it got, the colder it got.

We visited Catherine Halcomb first. Kerri was teaching school in Show Low. We had a nice visit. Catherine seemed to be in a positive mood although we did spend some time talking about her forgetfulness. We said our goodbye's and headed for the MacArthur's.

Chelsea and her kids were home. We gave them their Valentine goodies and I gave each of the kids a little crystal angel after telling them what a guardian/ministering angel was. Boone kept his for less than a minute and threw it on the ground. I talked with Boone and we played catch with his stuffed dog that he calls Brutus. Chelsea says he likes trucks and guns. Peyton just turned nine and says she wanted to be baptized if there aren't a lot of people there. I think the bishop needs to interview her and since they don't come to church I'm not sure how that will work out.

The MacArthur's have lots of chickens and they are hatching eggs in an incubator. Chelsea says all of the eggs have been fertilized. Here is a picture of the incubator. The eggs will begin to hatch after 21 days.
The incubator, Boone, Peyton and Chelsea
Scotlyn was across the room.

As we were leaving Chelsea told us that someone picked up their dog, Ernie and took him home. They actually shaved his hair before they advertised online that they had him and the MacArthur's got him back.

Janna Grombach is in the valley at a funeral so we didn't get to visit her.

Kathy told me that their property taxes have doubled since last year. Last year they were $2,500 and now they are $5,000. That means ours will be even more. I don't understand and James is going to be upset.

James and I had ham sandwiches and tomato soup for dinner. I love simple dinners.

James spoke with his cousin Lee on the phone for quite awhile this evening. Lee is 93. His wife Polie passed away a couple of years ago from the effects of the Covid vaccine. She had not been well for awhile and said she wanted to go to Chandler to see her kids. She passed away while they were there. Lee was at Bueler's Mortuary and had Polie's phone in his pocket. She had passed a couple of hours before when her phone rang. Lee answered it and it was Polie's voice saying: "This is Polie, I want you to know everything is okay."
A miracle and such a comfort to Lee.

Milky Ranch Story #1
By: Monte Maxwell, oldest grandchild
of Marlin & Betty Maxwell

"AWWWWW H_ ll!!!" the old man screamed. "Get your ____ up, you're letting them all out!"

As I lay there in the dirt, my left eye beginning to swell, and blood  running from both my mouth and nose, my nine-year old self struggled to get to my feet and shut the gate as the cattle rushed by and over me. Such was my devotion to the screaming old man on horseback, that even though I was scared and injured, I wanted to please him and show him just how good a cowboy I was.

I pulled myself to my feet and began swinging the heavy wooden corral gate shut, stemming the stream of cattle rushing out of it. Just as I get it shut, "Open the damn gate so I can get 'em back in!" are the angry words I hear.

We had been rounding up cattle to take to the auction. On a cattle ranch such as ours, there are a few different ways to earn a living. Taking cattle to the auction wasn't one of them. Usually if one of our bovine friends had become sick, injured, couldn't or didn't have a calf, or in this case had become so wild and unruly that they were a danger to themselves and all around them, you took them to the auction. You basically cut your losses and at least got something out of them.

Enter our friend "Yeller" into the story. Yeller was an old, large Charolais cow who hadn't had a calf in a couple of years. She had long curved hooves, wild crazy eyes, and was one of the meanest cows on the range. Yeller was wild on the range and would run from any horseman she saw and often would stampede the herd along with her. On the rare occasion you might get her into the corral, she was worse.

I had already had a run-in with Yeller a few weeks prior during branding season. We had her in a small corral up near Middle Well. This was a smaller corral away from the main corrals at the ranch house that we often used when branding this season's calf crop. It was much more convenient than driving them all the way to the house and then driving them back. Yeller was a holy terror in the corral and had already chased me up the fence multiple times before we opened the gate and let her out so we could finish with the branding. The rough and tumble cowboy I wanted to be acted like he wasn't afraid of her while the little boy in me was terrified of the big yellow cow with the crazy eyes and crooked feet.

As luck would have it, we were rounding up a small group of cattle and separating them to take to some to auction and move others to a different pasture. Yeller ended up in the lead group and as luck would have it, she was dumb enough to run right into the corrals at the house leading the rest of the herd.

"Let's make sure we get rid of the big yellow _ _ _ _ _," my grandpa yelled. "We sure as hell don't need her around."

If you had ever worked cattle with my grandfather, you would know that he never works the gate. Never opens or closes one, always delegates that job to someone else. Being that we were the only two there, the duty fell to me.

Our corrals at the time were made of old, weather-beaten wood, and the gates were heavy as hell. They often drug on the ground and always made sure to stick a splinter or two into your hands. I was a small boy and although I had always been large and strong for my age, the gates were a little beyond me.

Driven equally by the desire to please my grandpa and the fear of the big yellow cow turning around and running me down, I was able to muster all of my adrenaline-fueled strength and get the gate about 95% shut. I was feeling very proud of myself and only lacked about six inches of getting the gate closed and trapping Yeller in the corral.

As luck would have it, that mean yellow devil realized where she was. As I was nearing the last couple feet of closing the gate and trapping her inside, Yeller made a mad dash for freedom. Summoning all the anger and hate that she possessed, that crazy demon cow smashed all of her 1,800 pounds of fury into my partially closed gate.

In football lore there lies the grand myth of a hit so vicious that it knocks the opposing player's cleats out of the ground and often over their head. This hit is known as the "decleater". While I wasn't wearing cleats at the time, I was treated to a Hall of Fame decleater worthy of any ESPN Top 10 list. The gate smashed into the left side of my face and continued through me, lifting my little boy body off the ground and depositing me around five yards back. Jack Tatum would have been very proud of Yeller's work that day.

As I lay there, bruised, battered and bloodied, trying to avoid being trampled to death, I hear my grandpa screaming at me to get the gate shut and many other obscenities aimed at my personal toughness and courage. I somehow will myself up from the ground, summon up all my strength while trying not to succumb to tears, and get the gate shut, trapping all but 6-7 of the herd.

I am very proud of myself right then. I had overcome injury and fear and was able to do a grown man's job of closing a very heavy gate in a very tense situation.

My silly moment of juvenile pride was short-lived however as I suddenly hear, "What the hell are you doing?!?" the old man was screaming. "Open the damn gate so I can get 'em back in."

I open the gate, on horseback he pushes the cattle back in, and I manage to shut the gate. With a sense of pride and accomplishment, I lead my horse outside in the larger corral, tie him up and get ready to begin separating the cattle into the two groups that were either being sold at auction or being released into another pasture. My grandfather rides up and yells at me, "Why the hell did you let them all out!"

Such was my life-long love-hate relationship with the man named Marlin Maxwell, my grandfather, and the place called the Milky Ranch.

At lunch on Harold's birthday he said to me: "If I would have known how my dad treated Monte and Brian I never would have allowed them to go to the ranch."

I blanked out some of the words dad said because they are just to rough. I will put a story on my blog every Thursday until I  have gone through all of them.

Happy Birthday Trina! She sent me this picture from ten years ago, when Lola was a baby. I remember bringing her these brownies and can't believe it's been ten years.

Trina, we love you!

Trina is going hiking for her birthday. Not a big surprise. The kids have a half day of school so it should be fun.

James wrote a letter to the owner's of the building where he did the work for Daryl Johnson. He's asking for $15,000 out of the $21,000 he is owed. They have offered $2,000. Here is the letter:

Dear Mr. Harter:
I have read your response from the property owner. I have contacted Titan Lien services and they have assured me that the lien was not wrongfully recorded.
Based on conversations which my foreman and I had with the owner's property manager, they were aware of Mr. Johnson's improvements from the beginning. The manager, Fran Michie, had been on the job at least twice before that, according to my foreman and another employee.
Ms. Michie commented to me in the presence of my foreman how good everything looked while we walked the building during the last few days of construction. When I mentioned not getting paid, she called Daryl Johnson a conman and indicated to us that his lease agreement stated that the lease would be terminated if a lien was filed.
I actually gave him an extra two months before I had the lien recorded.
You also stated that the owner is uncertain about the value of the work. I want to state here that when we started, the building was in such a condition that it could not have been leased and the owner would have had no income from the building until many improvements had been made. I have also been told that Mr. Johnson made his lease payments while construction was going on.
When we started, the floor was concrete with no covering or finish. Now there is a new $10,000 epoxy floor.
In addition, there were several plumbing problems, including vents which were terminated in the attic instead of through the roof, which left a bad smell in the rooms. In addition we found bare wires behind the drywall, and at one of the AC units.
The floor was cluttered with air conditioning ducts which had to be removed and replaced with new ones. Many of the ceiling tiles were missing or damaged. The bathroom was non-compliant with the building code. We added a new toilet and grab bars to make it handicap accessible.
The electrical switches which were existing were also non-compliant and had to be lowered to accommodate the handicapped. That resulted in extra drywall work.
The drywall was so bad that it had to be re-finished and some of it had to be replaced. We replaced doors with solid core doors and wired for a TV monitor.
We furnished 9 new barber chairs, which still belong to me because I have not yet been paid for them.
Since we did $70,000 worth of improvements, surely the owner's could pay for $21,000 to cover the essential repairs to bring the property up to code. Those repairs were required before the city gave a certificate of occupancy.
Please have your client reconsider. I am willing to settle for a sum of $15,000 and to leave the barber chairs if the owner leases the space as a barber shop. The chairs alone cost around $11,000, as I recall.
If they are unwilling, I will have no choice but to hire an attorney. Titan Lien Services has recommended three, including Jim Reed whom you spoke to earlier. I will ask them to include attorney's fees in the suit.
Sincerely,

Since I felt the need to share this letter and it took quite a bit of time, I won't be starting the Milky Ranch stories until tomorrow.

James and I went grocery shopping this afternoon. I am making baked ziti for the ward Italian dinner on Friday evening, and enchiladas to feed the missionaries on Saturday. I also bought James some dark chocolate for Valentine's day.

Sheri texted today to check on us. Also, she said Ian fixed their leak. Way to go Ian!

I made appointments to visit Catherine Halcomb and Chelsea MacArthur and her kids tomorrow afternoon. Janna Grombach, the other sister we minister to is out of town at a funeral. Willy's niece passed away. Willy's sister has lost her husband and 4 of her 6 kids to a rare kidney disease. Janna will be back on Sunday.

We had Taco Bel for dinner on the way home from town.

Notes & Quotes

"The Lord is in the small details of our lives, and those incidents and opportunities are to prepare us to lift our families and others as we build the kingdom of God on earth. The Lord will be with you as you keep His commandments."
- Elder Ronald A. Rasband

I got up to go to the bathroom and someone
took my seat while I was gone.

Trenda's three little boys.
All of their names start with E, but I don't
remember what they are.
Their last name is Ellsworth.
