"Abide In Me, And I In You;
Therefore Walk With Me"
Elder David A. Bednar
Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles
"And the Lord said unto Enoch: Go forth and do as I have commanded thee, and no man shall pierce thee. Open thy mouth, and it shall be filled, and I will give thee utterance....
"Behold my Spirit is upon you, wherefore all thy words will I justify; and the mountains shall flee before you, and the rivers shall turn from their course; and thou shalt abide in me, and I in you; there walk with me."

James left around 4:45 this morning after getting me up so I could say a family prayer before he left. He told me to be sure and pray that he would get their safely, which I did, and then I went back to bed. I am officially home alone.

I felt well today and tried to keep busy. I studied the Book of Mormon and Come Follow Me. I worked on my puzzle and walked. I spent time texting back and forth with Kim and Sheri, arranging a trip to the Gilbert temple next Tuesday. James said we could get a hotel room Monday night.

I spoke with Stacy about Jared Ammon. She found a treatment center for alcoholism and depression. Paul took a two week leave of absence from work so he could be of help.

James made it to the valley safely. He worked at the Glendale Airport cleaning up and then went to the 51st Avenue job. He has still not received the last two payments from Advantage Medical.

This evening when he arrived at Darrel and Trina's he called me. He was walking to Safeway in order to get something for breakfast. We had a nice visit. I wished we would have thought to had prayer together.

I listened to Elder Corbitt and Elder Bednar's conference addresses and Brother Halverson on Unshaken Saints and to my book, "Where the Stars Meet the Sea." I also remembered to feed Luna her dinner. As soon as I walk outside she whinnies and starts pawing the ground. She is such a diva.

Do You Know Why I As A Christian Believe in Christ?
Ahmad S. Corbitt
Of the Seventy
I informed my new friend that we have a spirit in addition to a body and that God is the Father of our spirits. I told her we lived with our Heavenly Father before our births into this mortal world. Because He loves her and all His children, He made a plan for us to receive a body in the image of His glorified body, be part of a family, and return to His loving presence to enjoy eternal life with our families like He does with His. But, I said, we would face two main obstacles in this necessarily fallen world: (1) physical death - the separation of our bodies from our spirits. Of course, she knew we would all die. And (2) spiritual death - our separation from God because our sins, mistakes, and flaws as mortals distance us from His holy presence. She related to this too.

Today is Memorial Day. The day we honor those who fought and died for the freedoms we love so dearly. I am grateful for those who fought so that I might live in freedom and peace.

We had an interesting discussion today about our Come Follow Me lesson for this week. There are three different accounts of a woman anointing Jesus with spikenard from an alabaster box, which makes the account a little confusing because all of the accounts are different. To add to the confusion in Luke 7:36-50, earlier in Jesus' ministry a woman came into the home of Simon the Pharisee where Jesus was with an alabaster box and anointed his feet with spikenard. It says this woman was a sinner and the focus of the story because of her worship of Jesus her sins were forgiven.

John identifies this woman in Matthew 26:6-13; Mark 14:3-9; and John 12:1-8 as Mary, sister to Martha and Lazarus. This took place in Simon the lepers house in Bethany.

Here are some things I learned from the account:
In Matthews account is says she anointed His head. In the other accounts it says His feet. By anointing Jesus while He was still alive, the woman, Mary, acknowledged His impending death and burial. The ointment was very expensive, worth more than 300 denari or a years wages for a common laborer. Mary stands out as the first disciple to understand and openly accept the Savior's teaching that He must suffer and die.

James went to town earlier to buy a new connection for the trailer. The lights work and one of the brakes works, but the brake on the right does not. I was very concerned but he says he has driven before with the same situation and it was fine. What can I say?

In order to spend some time together and for James to look for a sink for the job on 51st Avenue, we drove into town around noon. We stopped for lunch at Taco Bell where I got a taco and a bean burrito and James got a taco and a Burrito Supreme. We do a lot of mixing business and pleasure and eating in the car.

Stacy called me this afternoon. I think she needed someone to talk to because she is dealing with a lot of stress. She said Jared Ammon showed up Saturday night and right now he is detoxing on her couch. He has hit rock bottom and has a humble attitude and is asking for help.

Jared can make $300 in a nights work but he has no money. His arms are covered in tatoos. He has a room mate and the rent is due on June 1st. Jared's share is $1,000. He does not want to go back to the bar to work. Not only is he an alcoholic but he is bipolar.

Stacy is also worried about Joshua who has a non-member girlfriend and is spending a lot of time with her. She is also trying to contact Tara about Trisha's son that Jared & Kacey want. All of this plus the fact that she is to stay off of her foot for another three weeks. She feels overwhelmed. Oh yes, Paul's going through a rough patch at work and there is that to worry about. I told her she needed to go to Heavenly Father and talk to Him about all of her problems.

Marvin and Mary came over this evening and Marvin gave J.A. a blessing. Mary gave him $500 to help with rent. Mary is having a partial masectomy on Friday and Stacy didn't want to ask her for money but Paul didn't mind.

This afternoon I texted Kathy Crane and asked her who told her that I was making the cake for Barbara's wedding. She said that Stefani and Alicia had told her. Stefani is my ministering sister and she and her partner Donna Peeler came over early in May for a visit. I had asked about Barbara's cake and Stefani said she wanted a carrot cake. I made the comment that I had a great recipe for a carrot cake as I had made one for Cammy Grapp in 2021. That was all that was said.
Kathy sent me this text:
I guess Sister Gilbert was in charge of the food. I guess she was the one who should have gotten in touch with you. Everyone assumed you were making the cake. It was just a communication problem. There were plenty of cupcakes. Stefani asked me to decorate the food table in different layers. I had the food table set up in my layers and decorations. It looked quite pretty. When I showed up on Saturday, I guess Sister Finnell and Stefani, who went along with her, wanted it to look more like Sis Finnell's decor, so they took my decorations down and used Lynda's. All the years I have been decorating, never had that happen. I guess during the Saturday may 13 dinner at Ruth and George Wallace's these sisters sat down with Barbara and decided who would do stuff.
Me: I am sorry that happened to you Kathy. Also, I would have been happy to make the cake if I had been asked.
Kathy: I know you would Karen.

This evening James was determined that we were going to finish our book and we stayed up an hour longer than he wanted to so we could. I also finished my book.

The Imperfect Harvest
Elder Vern P. Stanfill
Of the Seventy
Becoming perfected in Christ is the process, lovingly guided by the Holy Ghost, of becoming more like the Savior.

After The Fourth Day
Elder W. Mark Bassett
Of the Seventy
When the Savior arrived in Bethany, all had lost hope that Lazarus could be saved - it had been four days, and he was gone. Sometimes during our own challenges, we might feel like Christ is too late, and our hope and faith might even feel challenged. My witness and testimony are that as we move forward with faith in Jesus Christ, the fourth day will always come. He will always come to our aid or to raise our hopes back to life. He has promised:
"Let not your heart be troubled."
"I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you."

My printer would not print color this morning and I wanted color for my lesson. Later I asked Kerri why and she said to clean the heads. I will, later.

Chuck is sick again so James went to ward council. Yesterday my car had a flat tire. I was concerned about how I would get to church with him gone so I determined that I would take him to ward council. Well, my dear sweetheart bought a tire repair kit and repaired my tire so I could drive my car to church.

When I got to church I sat my bag in the second row on the left side where we always sit. Very few people were in the chapel, they were just beginning to gather. I had Janna's gift and small cake with me. She wasn't there so I went out in the south foyer to wait for her. As I sat there more than 50 people came in and I did not know one of them. Most of them were young people. I almost wanted to go outside and see if there was a bus unloading people outside. The hills are alive with people this weekend. We were filled clear back to the baptismal font in the second overflow. Someone said there were 300 people but I think there were more. We always have a crowd on holiday weekends but this is the most in the 12 years I have been here.

No Janna, so I put the cake in the kitchen refrigerator and put the gift at the side on the counter.

Bridgett Jordan and her son who is visiting her sat by us. Still no Sue Hubble. I contacted her later and she is okay. She has just been visiting family. She said she will be back next week.

As we were waiting for sacrament meeting to start Wendy DeWitt came over to speak to me. When I asked if she wanted to teach today she had told me that she would not be here. She came over to explain. She said that instead of going to the valley her family had come up here. Before she left she said I had a piece of straw in my hair. She looked at James to indicate that he should get it out for me and then she left. James looked at my hair and said, "You do not have any straw in your hair." I was worried so I looked in my phone. I couldn't see any. Then I began to think: What would I need to be doing to get straw in my hair. Did Wendy really mean, "Your hair looks like straw." I don't know but I can't dwell on this because I have to get up in front of all of the sisters and teach Relief Society. I wasn't offended and didn't think she meant to criticize me but I just wondered what she saw.

We had six priesthood holders passing the sacrament today instead of the usual five. Most all of them took two water trays. It took much longer than usual to pass the sacrament to everyone.

Makaila Finnagen was the youth speaker today. She is Rebecca McCamy's daughter. She spoke on love, share, and invite and how we show love to others when we talk to them about the gospel and invite them to activities or to church.

Christ and Mike Brady were the main speakers. In all the time I have lived in Vernon I don't think they have ever spoke in sacrament meeting before.

Chris used Elder Soares's conference address, "Followers of the Prince of Peace" as the basis for her talk. Cease to contend one with another. Focus on the Lord. Clothe ourselves with the bond of charity. "Charity is the outward expression of an inward understanding of grace." ( I heard this on Don't Miss This and added it here). We live in tumultuous times. The devil rages in the hearts of men. We must be peacemakers as our prophet has asked us to do.

Mike said his family has lived in Vernon for over 100 years and he has lived here all of his life. He talk was based on "The Lord Teaches Us to Minister" by Elder Uceda. With our Savior's help, we can love His precious sheep and minister to them as He would. Our privilege is to bear His love and to add our own love to friends and neighbors, feeding, tending, and nurturing them, as the Savior would have us do. His servants will minister to the one. We will minister in His name, with His power and authority, and with His loving kindness.

I teased James, who is conducting elder's quorum, that his teacher, Ron Hall wasn't here. He and Denice were not sitting in their regular spot. During sacrament meeting I saw him studying the lesson. As we walked out of the chapel I saw Ron and pointed him out to James. Brother Hall was our bishop when we moved to Vernon and is very responsible. James mentioned to him he didn't think he was here and Bishop Hall said, "When I have a responsibility I will always be here." James said he did a great job. I am sure he did. He is a very spiritual man.

As I was setting up in the Relief Society room Kerri Halcomb said to me: "I saw Janna, she's here." I had forgotten. I went into the chapel and saw Janna. I wished her a happy birthday and then told her that her gift and cake were in the kitchen. I would go get them but I was teaching Relief Society. As I walked hurriedly back to the Relief Society room I decided I needed to take her the gift and cake. I got them, went back to the chapel and she wasn't there. As I was going back I saw Willy. I handed him the pink gift bag and the mini-cake and asked him if he would please give them to Janna as I was teaching. He said he would.

My lesson went well. Lots of discussion on finding personal peace. As we read John 14:15-27 it was evident that the Savior was referring to the Holy Ghost as the other comforter. Barbara's friend Mary, a visitor from Tucson shared how her non-member husband joined the Church because he felt the Spirit. She said they were the second couple to be sealed in the Tucson temple. A return missionary young adult sister shared a time when she was on her mission in South America and she received a sign that the Lord knew her and loved her. Great stuff.

When I got home I texted Janna and asked if she got her gift and cake. She said she did and thanked me. Our texts went like this:
Me: Did you get your cake and gift? I gave them to Willy.
Janna: Yes. Thank you so much.
Me: Oh good. Have a great day!
Janna: Thank you.
Me: I forgot to explain the #1 candle. You are #1 on your birthday.
Janna: Lol. Thank you. I took it as my first birthday cake that you made.
Me: That too!
Janna: I hope you know Karen how much I love you and the example you and Jim have set for Willy and I. You are one of my biggest blessings.
Me: Thank you Janna, that means a lot to us. I am so glad we got to develop a friendship. That's what the gospel does. It brings people together.
Me: Tell Willy thanks for carrying a pink bag and a mini cake around the church for me. He is the best!
Janna: Pink is his favorite color. Seriously. He painted his race cars pink blue and white. Your cake was delicious.
Me: Wow! I love him even more! Thank you Janna.

Today was a good day. I am always grateful for the Sabbath day.

"Hosanna to the Most High God
Elder Ronald A. Rasband
Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles
What began with the heralding of Jesus as the promised Messiah in His triumphant entry into Jerusalem closed with His Crucifixion and Resurrection. By divine design, His atoning sacrifice concluded HIs mortal ministry, making it possible for us to live with our Heavenly Father for eternity.

I studied my lesson for awhile this morning before I went in to start Janna's birthday cake. I told her I would make a small cake. I used a five inch pan because it fits perfectly in my cake boxes. I had set out the butter, buttermilk, eggs, and cream cheese for the frosting earlier so they would be room temperature. The recipe called for the eggs to be separated and I had a problem with that and used six eggs instead of four. Janna wants a red velvet cake with chocolate chips and cream cheese frosting. My goal was to get the cakes baked and frosted before time to get ready for Barbara and Terry's wedding at five.

I made two little cakes and decorated them and put them in the refrigerator outside and then went in to get ready for the wedding.

As James and I were sitting waiting for the wedding to begin Kathy Crane came up to me and ask if I had brought the cake for Barbara and Terry. Someone had told her I was making the cake. I told her that no one had asked me to make the cake. I am not sure how this rumor got started but for some reason I felt guilty. After the wedding ceremony was over and people were in line for the food Lynda Finnell came up to me and asked if I had made the cake. I told her that no one asked me to. As a result of this confusion Barbara and Terry have no wedding cake. I was distraught and went over to apologize to Barbara, sweet, wonderful Barbara. She just brushed it aside and said, "You can't read minds." I told her I would make her a carrot cake for her birthday on July 12th. She seemed happy with that. I also told her I would bring her a cake topper over this evening, which James and I did after going to Dollar General to get some flowers and a little cake carrier.

James took me in to town to get a taco and a bean burro from Taco Bell. He is such a sweetie. We went home and I got the little cake topper ready. This is what I ended up with.

James is going to the valley on Monday and taking the Cat. When he tried to hook the trailer up to the truck he realized that someone had stolen the connector that turns on the lights and the brakes. He had left the trailer and Barbara's and guys working on electrical issues had been there. He suspects it may have been one of them. Now he will have to get another one before leaving on Monday.

While we were at Barbara's we met her son Chris, her grandson, his fiance and his fiance's family who used to live in Chandler and attend one of the Cooper wards. It's a small world.

Back to Barbara and Terry's wedding. They make such a cute older couple. Both of them are short and Barbara probably weighs 90 pounds. She looked beautiful in her dress and carrying a bouquet of red roses. Chris, Barbara's son, walked her down the aisle. Bishop Hunsaker officiated and was doing a great job when his telephone rang and he had to turn it off. The ceremony was short and sweet and afterward they kissed. There was no reception line. Everyone just turned around and walked back to the refreshment table and then found a place to sit. I could tell that Lynda Finnell did the decorating because the cultural hall looked beautiful.

After taking Barbara her cake topper I came home and changed my clothes, did some walking and worked on my lesson.

"Remember What Matters Most"
President M. Russell Ballard
Acting President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles
When my wife Barbara passed away, our children put on her headstone several lessons that Barbara wanted them to remember. One of those lessons is "what matters most is what lasts longest."

James left at four this morning for the valley. He is working on the 51st Avenue job. I guess Armando wasn't through sanding the drywall and he had to breath that dust most of the day. He tried to make it home in time to go and help clean the temple.

He left early and was making good time when just outside of Payson traffic was backed up. He forgot it is a holiday weekend and half of the valley is heading for the mountains.

We were to be at the temple by 8 p.m. He called me in Show Low and said he wasn't going to make it. I did not want to go by myself, driving at night, so I texted Brother Miller and told him we would not make it and explained to him what happened to James. He said it was okay. I didn't know at the time but the Miller's, our temple cleaning co-ordinators, didn't make it either. Something was wrong with Cress and they spent the evening in the hospital.

I had a good day. I read my scriptures, blogged, worked on my puzzle and walked. This afternoon I did some errands. I am making a birthday cake for Janna Grombach tomorrow and I needed to go to Walmart to get some cream cheese and buttermilk.

My first stop was at the post office where I picked up a package which had James's new Stanley tumbler in it and a potassium supplement that I ordered. Everything was fine on my way into town as I listened to my book, "Petticoat Spy" until I got to the hill by the Taco Bell. Just like James said happened to him, traffic just abruptly stopped. It took forever to go a mile. Mind you, that mile has three lights. As I was approaching the last light, the one between the hospital and Walmart, I decided to take a short cut. I was going to Circle K which is across the highway from Walmart. I turned into the Walgreen's parking lot and cut across to the Circle K. I probably saved myself five minutes. I saw the reason for the traffic holdup. There had been an accident in front of Walmart and they were just cleaning it up and had one lane blocked. They finished while I was getting gas. Before I purchased a carwash I looked over and saw that the carwash had a rope pulled across the entrance with a big closed sign on it. Darn! I will have to go to the Splash and Dash on the way home.

Walmart was busy but not the busiest I've ever seen it. The first thing I put in my basket was a bag of cherries. I know that James will love them. I got two boxes of frozen shrimp, butterfly shrimp for James and coconut shrimp for me. As I was going down the aisle to get some Coolwhip I happened to pass by the ice cream and noticed that Bluebell had pint-sized cartons of Dr. Pepper Float ice cream. I had to try one so I put one in my basket.

When I was finished in the grocery section of the store I headed over to get a new broom. I want a broom and dustpan in my entryway closet  to use on the wood floor that gets so dusty. I only notice the dust in the afternoon when the sun is shining through the front door and side windows.

The last thing I bought was cards, one for Barbara and Terry's wedding, Emmy's birthday, Pam's birthday, and Janna's birthday. When I went to checkout I noticed a cashier with no line. I hurried over and began placing my items on the counter. No self-checkout today!

As I left the parking lot I had my pint of ice cream in my lap. I am out of the plastic spoons I normally have in my glove compartment. Oh well, I will use the metal straw from my tumbler. The ice cream was good but I'm not sure if was worth the calories and if I will buy it again. I needed to try it once.

There were two or three cars ahead of me at the Splash and Dash. I finished up my ice cream and listened to my book, "Petticoat Spy", which I love by the way. ( I looked through my "Books I Have Read"
and realized I read this book back in 2017. It doesn't matter because I don't remember the details, although I did think it sounded a little familiar). I bought the more expensive package and spent $12. Everything was fine until it was time to move forward for the drying. I couldn't get my car out of park. I panicked and tried several times but it wouldn't move. I was afraid something was wrong with my transmission. I got out of the car and went to the woman behind me and told her I couldn't get my car to move. She was very kind and understanding. I went to get a worker to see if they could help. Brother Skousen, from our high council was the worker I spoke to. His Brother Christ is in our ward so I know he is a good guy. As we walk over he says if you can't get it out of park, I can't push you. I sat down and tried again when Brother Skousen said to me, put your foot on the brake, which I did and the gear slid into drive. I was so panicky I didn't realize I wasn't stepping on the brake. I was embarrassed and relieved at the same time. Thank you Brother Skousen! I was on my way. Of course I missed getting my car dried.

James got home around 7:30. He was so sad about not living up to his commitment to clean the temple. We walked and listened to our book, "When Dreams May Come" which honestly, I am a little bored with, especially compared to "Petticoat Spy."

Kacey's post: I had forgotten just how stunning all the stained glass is in the San Antonio temple. And so nice to go back to the place where we sealed the deal. It's been an exhausting couple of days but some of my favorites.
