"Pressing Toward the Mark"
Elder Edward Dube
Of the Seventy
It is not so much about what we are going through in life but what we are becoming. There is joy in pressing toward the mark. I testify that He who overcame all will help us as we look up to Him.

"Remember Your Way Back Home"
Elder Jose A. Teixeira
Of the Presidency of the Seventy
We have Jesus Christ's perfect example to follow, and the journey toward our eternal home is possible only because of His teachings, His life, and His atoning sacrifice - including His death and glorious Resurrection.

Family Proclamation
#7
The Family is ordained of God. Marriage between man and woman is essential to His eternal plan. Children are entitled to birth within the bonds of matrimony, and to be reared by a father and a mother who honor marital vows with complete fidelity. Happiness in family life is most likely to be achieved when founded upon the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ. Successful marriages and families are established and maintained on principles of faith, prayer, repentance, forgiveness, respect, love, compassion, work, and wholesome recreational activities. by divine design, father are to preside over their families in love and righteousness and are responsible to provide the necessities of life and protection for their families. Mothers are primarily responsible for the nurture of their children. In these sacred responsibilities, fathers and mothers are obligated to help one another as equal partners. Disability, death, or other circumstances may necessitate individual adaptation. Extended families should lend support when needed.

"We come to the Inn as we are, with the foibles and imperfections we each have. Yet we all have something needed to contribute. Our journey to God is often found together."

I was up at 5:30 this morning. James can't find his elk call that works. He also can't find his back brace, which he had on Saturday. This is his favorite time of year because the elk are bugling and he loves to call to them. He is leaving for the valley this morning and will have to take a different back brace than the one he likes. (When he got to the valley he found his back brace in the backseat of his truck.)

James left this morning before 10. This evening he called me and ask if his green pillbox was in the bathroom. Yes, it is. He forgot it and won't be home until tomorrow evening.

I had an appointment this morning with the second counselor in the stake Relief Society presidency, Sister Gilliland. I gave her directions on how to get here because I was quite sure she wouldn't find us on her GPS. She came, she said, to get to know me better. She lives in Lakeside near Rainbow Lake and she and her husband have been here for about 3 years. She is probably my age.  She raised her 10 children in Glendale, Arizona. We had visited for awhile about our families when she told me the story of her youngest son who died of complications from Type 2 diabetes. He left behind a wife and 4 children. We shared parenting stories and she told me about the app her family uses to keep in touch. It's called Marco Polo. I've heard of it but I've never used it. She said the reason she likes it is because you can go on and leave a video and other people can see it at their own convenience. We also talked about family history and indexing. She suggested we have a "stand up" meeting every Sunday after the block. You stand up, ask who needs help, and then assign someone to help them. It takes less that 10 minutes. She also stressed the importance of the youth consultants knowing that this is an important calling and they need to help all of the youth do family history.

When Sister Gilliland left I made a trip to town. I got a birthday gift for Sister DeWitt and some more cake baking accessories.

This evening I baked a strawberry cake and I used the high altitude directions. I baked the layers in three 6" round pans. All of the cakes sunk. I then cooked them a little longer which I'm not sure was the right thing to do. I made some cream cheese frosting and mixed it with canned strawberry frosting to make the flavor a mild strawberry and a light pink in color. I frosted the cake and it looked quite good.

I was worried about the layers and how they had sunk and didn't really feel comfortable giving this cake away. I also thought that Collin might not want to eat a pink cake. I wasn't sure about Wendy. I decided then that I was going to make a chocolate cake. Again, I baked 3-6" cakes of chocolate. I did not use the high altitude recipe, just the regular one. These cakes raised and had a "hump" on top. I put them on racks to cool and then wrapped them in plastic wrap thinking I would frost them in the morning. I did the dishes and put the pink cake in the cake carrier. It was 12:30 when I went to bed. I walked over 13,000 steps today.

Happy Birthday Denise!

Family Proclamation
#6
Husband and Wife have a solemn responsibility to love and care for each other and for their children. "Children are an heritage of the Lord" (Psalm 127:3). Parents have a sacred duty to rear their children in love and righteousness, to provide for their physical and spiritual needs, and to teach them to love and serve one another, observe the commandments of God, and be law-abiding citizens wherever they live. Husbands and wives - mothers and fathers - will be held accountable before God for the discharge of these obligations.

 Affirmation
I am entrusted to create a welcoming environment in His church, full of grace, so that all can feel His love and discover the fullness of His gospel.

Up at 5:11. I read on Facebook that one of our friends from high school had a son pass away from Covid over the weekend. The friend's name is Loretta. She is the only Loretta I knew in high school. She grew up in Show Low and was in the Show Low first ward while I was in the Show Low second ward. Loretta was one of those people I was not best friends with but she was always nice and kind. When we needed to borrow some money she helped us get a home equity loan on our cabin in Pinedale. At this time she worked as a loan officer at Chase bank.  He son that passed left behind a wife and six children. My friend Karen S. knows Loretta because she is in her ward in Gilbert. Karen says that three of Dustin's children, (Loretta's son), have Covid. I'm not sure if Dustin lives up here or in the valley. Loretta and her husband Randy whom we also went to school with, although he was a little older, have three girls and two boys. Now we know two people who died of Covid recently.

James left for town before 7:30. I leave at 7:50. I picked him up at Discount Tire where he left his truck to get new tires. I took James to the Cancer Center for his two appointments and then went across to do some shopping at Walmart. James wanted some more pomegranate juice because it is effective in treating cancer. While I was shopping I saw the Bowen's from our ward. I guess they took Christy to school and decided to come to town. I also bought some more cake baking accessories.

After Walmart I went across the street to Circle K to wash my car. While I was in the carwash James called and said he was finished with his appointments and would walk back to the hospital. By the time I got across the street he was by Wendy's and I passed him up but stopped down the road and he ran and jumped in the car.

James wanted to go to the health food store, Natural Remedies and I wanted to go to the church bookstore, the Book Barn. They are two doors down from each other so this worked at well. The reason I wanted to go to Book Barn was to get baptism gifts and cards for Emsley and Eden, and something for Liana's birthday. Today is her birthday but I won't be going over until tomorrow. I picked out three necklaces and two cards when Sister Bowen came in. I asked her if she was following me and she laughed. Sean needed to go next door to get a new oxygen tank. When I went outside James was talking to Sean who was sitting in his car. I guess the health food store is closed on Monday's so he's going to have to come back.

Back to Discount Tire so James can pick up his truck and then we head for home. I listened to a new book called "Bonds of Loyalty."

As I was resting I got a call from my neighbor Kathy. She said Chuck was going to the dump and do we have any garbage for him to take. We always have garbage. Thanks Chuck. As I was talking to Kathy I told her about Wendy D. Kathy is the compassionate service leader in our ward and she is a great cook. I told her that I wanted to take Wendy a cake on Wednesday for her 70th birthday. She said she had some Cafe Rio meat and would make some burros, rice, and a salad.
We decided we would meet Wednesday morning by her gate. From the DeWitt's she will go into town to her appointments.

James and I listened to a couple of chapters from Blackmoor before he went out to work in the trenches. I did two blog posts today, Friday and Saturday, walked 12,000 steps and indexed. I also did a little cleaning. I had pumpkin Cheerios for dinner and James had squash and mushrooms. We were in bed by 10:30.

Happy Birthday Kacey!

Quorum of the Twelve Apostles
My dear brothers and sisters, on this Easter Sunday, I bear my solemn witness that Jesus rose from the dead and that He lives. I testify to you that through Him and HIs infinite Atonement, the Savior provided us the way to overcome death, both physically and spiritually. In addition to these great blessings, He also offers us comfort and assurance in difficult times. I assure you that as we put our trust in Jesus Christ and in His supernal atoning sacrifice, enduring in our faith to the end, we will enjoy the promises of our beloved Heavenly Father, who does everything within HIs power to help us return to His presence one day. This is His work and His glory!

Up at 6:30. I've gotten to be quite lazy on Sundays. It's a hard habit to break.

This week's "Come Follow Me" takeaway:
In D&C 103:22 and 105:16 the Lord uses the phrase, "the strength of my house." As I read this phrase I asked myself, what is the strength of my house? "Covenant keepers live here, the Spirit is always welcomed and invited here; visual reminders of the Savior and our covenants are found here; our home is a place of intentional learning; we both forgive and seek forgiveness here; this is a home built on love. We know who we are in this house, we know God is good and we cannot get by without Christ. These are the strengths of my house."

Sheri and Evan were the only ones who went to sacrament meeting with us. We were a little late and since we are doing every other row, we sat in the overflow, behind the Bowen family. It was nice to see Sean although he was on oxygen.

Bishop and Pierce are both gone so Brother Grapp conducted. Ty Woods from the high council who is speaking today was on the stand with him. Brother Grapp gave this quote before the speakers began: "Conflict is inevitable, contention is a choice." - Dieter F. Uchtdorf

Next week is fast and testimony meeting because the week after is General Conference and the week after that is stake conference. Brother Grapp encouraged us to read Isaiah 58 as part of our fast next week.

Our first speaker today was Paige Flake. I'm not sure what ward she is in but she will be leaving for the Washington D.C. mission on October 4th. She talked about some of the attributes and roles of Christ.  He is the Great King Immanuel, He is the light and life of the world, the Creator, the Savior of the universe, He loved His neighbor and Atoned for our sins. In the song, "The Lord is My Light" it says He is our strength and our song. We must learn to rely on Him. In the Book of Mormon it says, "Zeniff did go up in the strength of the Lord to battle. I know Jesus Christ offers us strength. With Him we are never lost. He takes our weaknesses and makes them into strengths. (see Ether 12:27). The keeper of the Gate to the Celestial Kingdom is the Holy One of Israel. (see 2 Nephi 9:41) He waits for us with open arms. (Can you imagine running into them?) He is the bread of life and descended below all things. He is the Comforter and saves us from the Refiner's fire. He loves each of us and connects us to Heaven. Because of Him life is full of meaning and purpose. He is the Light of the world and we are all born with the light of Christ. Our light increases when we choose to follow Him. Missionaries carry the light of Christ. They are Christ-centered and have the power to teach us to become Christ-like. Sister Flake said to be a lighthouse, not a disco ball. She talked about the song "Jesus Wants Me for a Sunbeam". Jesus is the Messenger of our Salvation. She bore her testimony before closing.

Special Musical Number: "Nearer My God to Thee" sung by Elder Wangsgard. He was absolutely awesome and could be a professional singer.

Brother Ty Woods - He spoke about miracles of the Savior. The Savior asked Peter, "Whom say ye that I am" Peter answered: "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the Living God." President Nelson has said that we won't be able to survive spiritually in the future without the constant guidance of the Holy Ghost. Distraction and divisiveness are tools of the adversary. Contention is a choice. We must reduce and eliminate contention. Our hearts need to be knit together in unity and love. Sometimes we judge others on their worst actions. We must not do that. Meeting our Savior will be the ultimate moment in our lives. What direction are we headed? If we are to bring others to Christ we must be headed there ourselves. We also must choose to follow the Prophet.

Collin came and sat by me during Sunday School. Wendy was not with him. James asked him if Wendy was okay and he said, "no." She fell off a ladder last Tuesday. She shattered the bones near her elbow and had to have a plate put in during surgery. She also hurt her hip and is not able to walk without a walker. Wendy's birthday is this coming Wednesday and she will be turning 70. Collin said she is not looking forward to turning 70 and told her kids not to do anything for her birthday. I told him I was going to bring her a birthday cake. On the way out of Sunday School we told Tamara but she is going to be gone on Wednesday so I need to find someone else to go with me to present the cake and sing Happy Birthday.

Brother Applegate was supposed to teach Sunday School today but it was Brother Scott instead. Brother A got his second vaccine this week and got sick after the first so he must have had a reaction to keep him home today. Brother Scott did a good job but he has a difficult time getting people involved. James and I probably answered more questions than anyone. I told James I think that people aren't sure what he wants from the questions he's asking. Maybe he should ask, "what was your takeaway from this week's lesson?"

Adam, Kaitlyn, Joshua, Sheri, Evan, Michael, and Joe were all gone home when we returned to the cabin.  My friend Maxine had given us a loaf of zucchini bread and James and I both had a piece. Since it has pineapple in it, Kim didn't want to try it, but Brian did.

When Kim and Brian left we took a picture of them on the front porch as is our tradition. The only people we have left are Max and Alex and they are in the family room watching football. They are anxious to watch the Cardinal's game which starts at one. James and I were tired. We went into the bedroom to take our naps. James's nap was cut short because Anthony called and asked him and his companion, Brother Westbrook, to bring him the sacrament. They were gone a couple of hours. James said it was a good visit and he is glad they went. Anthony has COPD and is mostly staying at home.

The Cardinals beat the Vikings 34-33 and Max and Alex give me a hug before they head for home. I'm home alone until James gets back from Anthony's.

I worked on my blog this evening until I felt a little sluggish and went to the recliner to take a break. While there, James brought me some shrimp to eat.
