"The Principles of My Gospel"
Elder David A. Bednar
Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles
The first three Articles of Faith identify fundamental aspects of the doctrine of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ: the nature of the Godhead in the first article of faith, the effects of the Fall of Adam and Eve in the second article of faith, and the blessings made possible through the Atonement of Jesus Christ in the third article of faith. And the fourth article of faith sets forth the first principles - the guidelines of exercising faith in Jesus Christ and repenting - and the first priesthood ordinances that enable the Atonement of Jesus Christ to be efficacious in our lives.

The Living Christ
P9
We declare in words of solemnity that His priesthood and His Church have been restored upon the earth - "built upon the foundation of . . . apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone" (Ephesians 2:20).

This morning as I was getting ready for church I was listening to Elder Bednar's conference talk, "The Principles of My Gospel." I have already listened to this talk two times but I did not remember that he mentioned the principle of "non-distraction." He mentioned a talk that Dallin H. Oaks gave to the priesthood in 1998 where he mentioned this principle. President Oaks was referring to the Aaronic priesthood as they prepare, bless, and pass the sacrament and how they should not distract from the ordinance. I just thought it was funny that I had not remembered hearing this principle before and now I have heard it from priesthood leaders two days in a row. I would not have considered it a principle of the gospel until now.

Elder Grapp and Brother Wright from the stake were our two priesthood leaders on the stand today. The Hunsakers and the Goodmans are out of town.

Our two new elders here in Vernon spoke today. Elder Zin who is from Utah, spoke on Elder Uchtdorf's talk, "God Among Us." The main principle of this talk is that God is among us, and is personally involved in our lives and actively guiding His children. Elder Zin told about as a youth preparing for a 50 mile hike. He and his dad went out one Saturday to hike. They thought the hike they chose was 12 miles long but it turned out to be 25. Elder Zin told how difficult it was for him to finish this hike and how several times he was ready to give up. His dad encouraged him and he was able to finish. When he had time to reflect on the experience he said he felt as if the Lord was personally involved in this experience with him.

Elder Uchtdorf's shares his experiences with his family living in Europe after World War 2. He said often he would think, "Is there any hope left in the world?"

He thought of the missionaries who taught his family the gospel and brought hope with them. Their message was that God lived and cared about us, even in these hours of turmoil, confusion, and chaos. That He actually appeared in our time to restore truth and light, His gospel and His Church. That He speaks to prophets again; that God is among is, and is personally involved in our lives and actively guiding His children.

Elder Bebe (Prounced baby) is from Canada. He spoke on Sister Jones's talk, "Essential Conversations." Sister Jones has been serving as the General Primary President for the past five years. She was released today. She says: "We cannot wait for conversion to simply happen to our children. Accidental conversion is not a principle of the gospel of Jesus Christ."

I love this talk so much. Sister Jones has given at least two talks that have really touched me. This is one of them. I am going to miss her.
Here are some quotes from her talk that I especially love:

"There is a uniquely special time in children's lives when they are protected from Satan's influence. It is a time when they are innocent and sin free. It is a sacred time for parent and child. Children are to be taught, by word and example, before and after they have "arrived unto the years of accountability before God."

"We cannot wait for conversion to simply happen to our children. Accidental conversion is not a principle of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Becoming like our Savior will not happen randomly. Being intentional in loving, teaching, and testifying can help children begin at a young age to feel the influence of the Holy Ghost. The Holy Ghost is essential to our children's testimony of and conversion to Jesus Christ; we desire them to "always remember him, that they may have his Spirit to be with them."

I might end up quoting the entire talk. I only wish I had had this talk when my children were younger and then taught it to my children.

"Consider the value of family conversations about the gospel of Jesus Christ, essential conversations, that can invite the Spirit. When we have such conversations with our children, we help them create a foundation, "which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if they build they cannot fall." When we strengthen a child, we strengthen the family."
"These vital discussions can lead children to:
1. Understand the doctrine of repentance.
2. Have faith in Christ, the Son of the living God.
3. choose baptism and the gift of the Holy Ghost when eight years old.
4. And pray and "walk uprightly before the Lord."

"The Savior urged, "Therefore I give unto you a commandment, to teach these things freely unto your children." And what did He want us to teach so freely?
1. The Fall of Adam
2. The Atonement of Jesus Christ
3. The importance of being born again

"We can have fun helping our children build spiritual resilience at any age. It doesn't have to be complicated or time intensive. Simple, caring conversations can lead children to know not only what they believe, but most important, why the believe it. Caring conversations, happening naturally and consistently, can lead to better understanding and answers. Let's not allow the convenience of electronic devices to keep us from teaching and listening to our children and looking into their eyes."

I could add more but I'm going to stop here. An amazing talk that every parent and grandparent should read!

Brother Wright took up the last few minutes by bearing his testimony of the Savior and His Gospel. It was heartfelt and several times he was near tears. I felt the Spirit so strongly when he was speaking.
It was a wonderful meeting.

The second hour we had Brother and Sister David Merrill from the stake speak to us on the SRS program. They are the stake facilitators. At the end of the class James decided he would like to sign up for the personal finance class. I have been trying for awhile to get him to do this so I was pleased.

Catherine H. parked our car in our garage after church. She and her daughter Kerri are going to Oklahoma and will be gone over a week. She is worried about rats getting up inside her car and chewing on wires if she leaves it outside. She and Kerri do not have a garage. I told her she was welcome to park it in our garage. She was thrilled and said I was the best ministering sister ever! I love Catherine. For being 78 years old she has a lot of spunk and life left in her.

James and I left for our timeshare in Scottsdale at 4:48. James left the key to the front door under the front door mat. Stacy is coming to stay Wednesday night on her way to pick up Joshua who is camping with the youth in their ward at Nutrioso. She is bringing him back so he can stay with Rowan, Evan, and Max at the timeshare with us on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

We got into a huge traffic jam right after leaving Payson. The traffic was bumper to bumper as far as you could see. I guess everyone was coming home from the mountains on this holiday weekend. This has never happened to us before. It slowed us down about an hour. We arrived at Sheraton Desert Oasis at 9:00. James went in and checked us in. I was grateful that they remembered I wanted a ground floor room. We are on the north side, rooms 1113 and 1114. James unloaded the car and I put things away. I brought 6 Christmas throws I had leftover from Christmas. James wanted to know why I was bringing blankets to a place that will be over 100 degrees. I told him it would not be 100 degrees inside. I told him he would thank me when I set the thermostat on 68 degrees.

After getting everything put away we both sat down at our computers and did some indexing. We ended up going to bed at 11:00. We love the bed and the pillows. So comfy!

Pinky promise to get him into heaven

"The Gospel Light of Truth and Love"
Elder Alan R. Walker
Of the Seventy
Shortly after the organization of the Church in this last dispensation, the Lord spoke to Joseph Smith and manifested His abounding love for us when He said:
"Wherefore, I the Lord, knowing the calamity which should come upon the inhabitants of the earth, called upon my servant Joseph Smith, Jun., and spake unto him from heaven, and gave him commandments; . . . "That mine everlasting covenant might be established; "That the fulness of my gospel might be proclaimed by the weak and the simple unto the ends of the world."

The Living Christ
P8
"That by him, and through him, and of him, the worlds are and were created, and the inhabitants thereof are begotten sons and daughters unto God" (D&C 76:22-24).

Inklings
Elder Becerra reminds us to reflect on how we really see each other. Are we simply glancing here and there, with our gaze mostly down as our paths cross, or are we fastening our eyes on each other when it really matters?

President and Sister Perkins presided at the temple today. Sister Perkins is so friendly. As soon as I came in the front door she began talking to me, asking me my name and where I was from. She worked with me in the baptistry. I was assigned to be greeter #2. Part of my responsibility is to welcome those coming in to do baptisms, direct to the clothing distribution, and redirect them to the chapel, and then take them from the chapel into the baptistry. She was very helpful and so was President Perkins. He explained specific procedures, which door I was to take the youth in and where they were to sit. During prayer meeting President Perkins talked about the principle of "non-distraction" while ordinances are being performed. He was speaking of this regarding baptisms here in the temple   . He said when a baptism is being performed there should be no talking, or walking through the room, or anything else that might take away from the ordinance itself.  I had never heard of this as a principle of the gospel but it certainly makes sense.
Our first group in the baptistry arrived at 7 a.m. It was a group of Deacon's from the Snowflake 6th ward, five of them, and two Melchizedek priesthood holders. Each group is given an hour to finish their ordinances. This little group took longer than scheduled because it took some of these boys so long to change clothes after being baptized. Here are the last names of these boys: Smith, Farnsworth, Reidhead, Christensen, and Brewer. There has to be a sister in the confirmation room. This was my responsibility. These boys looked so young and innocent. I was impressed that they would get up early on a Saturday morning and come to the temple to do baptisms. For a couple of them, this was their first time.

Our next group was not scheduled until 9 a.m. This was a group of young women and on our schedule it said there would be nine of them. Only four showed up with a priest to do the baptisms, and a Melchizedek priesthood holder and an advisor. These girls were quick. After the baptisms they dressed quickly and the confirmations were done in no time. I couldn't help but compare the two groups.
Two groups is all that are scheduled in the morning. Two more will be scheduled for the afternoon. Hopefully this will pick up as Covid restrictions are lifted. (We are still wearing masks at all times in the temple).

My next assignment was in the new name booth. First I gave the new name to the escort for the sister who is going through to receive her own endowments. There were five or six sisters in this session and the last one was in a wheelchair which took some maneuvering.
When I was finished I asked Sister Elmer if she had anything else for me to do. She said she did not, that I was free to go. This was at 11 a.m.

I waited in the car for James for an hour and a half. He was asked by Brother Elmer to participate in the prayer circle for the 11:00 session. He was one of the last workers to leave. Thank goodness I was in the shade and there was a breeze.

We went into town to get some lunch. I told James I didn't feel like going in so he went into El Cupido's and ordered our burros and drinks. I ordered the carne asada burro and James got the chili relleno burro. I got a large drink and he got a small. I told him next time to get two mediums because mine was too heavy to pick up with one hand. I could only eat half my burro. James ate about 2/3's of his.

I don't know why but we are always so tired when we get home from the temple, we both just collapsed for a couple of hours. The rest of the day I spent working on my blog, walking, and indexing. James forgot his suit and pants at the temple and Brother Greer from our stake met him at the Borden Ranch road off the 60. It was so nice of him to do that for James. The men have been directed not to leave their clothes at the temple. James also worked over at the Elkins' getting ready for concrete.

My friend Pam left cookies on our front porch. She asked me what my favorite were and I said oatmeal walnut. These cookies were divine! She baked them in her new portable gas oven.

Today's entertainment: "A Banner is Unfurled" with James, "A Proper Scoundrel" while walking, and "A Love Yarn" YouTube movie while blogging and indexing and "Heaven is Waiting" another movie on my phone.

James came in to tell me his tale of woe regarding the raven's nest on our property. I told him I had seen two large ravens around Luna's corral yesterday. He said he had figured, according to calculations he found on the internet, that the eggs wouldn't hatch for five to six weeks. Those eggs were there on May 1st and when he checked on them today, the eggs had already hatched and the birds had flown away. He was pretty disappointed. I am a little relieved.

This was such a great day because we had the privilege of serving in the temple. I love it!

'Why the Covenant Path'
Elder D. Todd Christofferson
Of the Quorum of the Twelve
"Your commitment to follow the Savior by making covenants with Him and then keeping these covenants will open the door to every spiritual blessing and privilege available to men, women, and children everywhere.
". . . The ordinances of the temple and the covenants you make there are key to strengthening your life, your marriage and family, and your ability to resist the attacks of the adversary. Your worship in the temple and your service there for your ancestors will bless you with increased personal revelation and peace and will fortify your commitment to stay on the covenant path.

Of Him the Prophet also declared: "And now, after the many testimonies which have been given of him, this is the testimony, last of all, which we give of him: That he lives!
"For we saw him, even on the right hand of God; and we heard the voice bearing record that he is the Only Begotten of the Father-

"Teaching with Power." Am I anxiously engaged in good causes? Did I bring to pass much righteousness this week?

This morning I blogged, indexed, and walked. I finished my audio book, "Fool Me Twice." Sometimes it's hard to put down a murder mystery.

I made some egg salad today and when James came home from Elkins for lunch we had egg salad sandwiches and soup. Very tasty.
After lunch we listened to a chapter from "A Banner is Unfurled" before taking our naps. We are so predictable.

James went to town this afternoon to pick up some wired mesh. He should have called first because they didn't have the size he needed so he wasted a trip.

My big project for the day was cleaning out the big cupboard in our bathroom. I should have taken a before picture, but here is the after.

You should have seen it before

I started a new book called, "A Proper Scoundrel." I listened to Scripture Gems as part of my Come Follow Me study.

I have indexed and reviewed over 5,000 names this month. James is going to make it to 7,000.

Jordan almonds are addictive and I wish James had never bought them because I love them too much.

Washed my temple dress, slip, and socks getting ready for tomorrow,

The weather is beautiful here right now.
