Guatemala City, Guatemala
32nd operating temple
Dedicated: 14-16 Dec 1984 by Gordon B. Hinckley

Atonement
DC 38:4
I am the same which have taken the Zion of Enoch into mine own bosom; and verily, I say, even as many as have believed in my name, for I am Christ, and in mine own name, by the virtue of the blood which I have spilt, have I pleaded before the Father for them.
Jesus Christ, Antemortal Existence of
1 Peter 1:20
Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,
Alma 58:1-12
When was a time you poured out your soul in prayer to God? How did it strengthen you?
"I am a walking prayer. I know that without Him, enduring life's everyday challenges would be impossible. I am strengthened through the peace that speaks to my soul giving me courage to press on. The gift of the Holy Ghost brings a great inward strength and peace that calms my heart in this troubled world of shifting values."
DC 124:91-110
What can we do to better understand our individual missions?
We can pray and ask. We can read and ponder the scriptures and our patriarchal blessing. We can look for the Lord's hand in our daily life and see how He is directing us and leading us to do His will.
General Conference
How Does the Holy Ghost Help You
Elder Gary E. Stevenson
"It is vital to our physical and spiritual safety that we keep the gift of the Holy Ghost. We begin to do so by striving to keep the commandments, having individual land family prayer, reading the scriptures, and seeking loving and forgiving relationships with family and loved ones. We should keep our thoughts, actions, and language virtuous. We should worship our Heavenly Father in our homes, at Church, and in the holy temple. Stay close to the Spirit, and the Spirit will stay close to you."

And This is Life Eternal
Elder C. Scott Grow
"You and I do the will of the Father by honoring our covenants, keeping the commandments, and serving God and our fellowmen. As we seek to do God's will by faithfully serving Him and our fellowmen, we feel His approval and truly come to know Him."

I read this report today on the Houston temple. "The Cypress Creek became a river and the current is so strong that it has been dangerous to even try and approach the temple, said temple president Marshall Hayes. Cypress Creek rose by 20 feet. It appears water to the depth of four or five inches has gone inside the temple. That includes a baptistry, a marriage waiting room, dressing rooms, kitchen, and laundry."

I am reading Sister Sheri Dew's book, "Worth the Wrestle." In her book she says we need to ask the Lord to teach us the language of revelation.

James and I made a trip to town to get tacos and to get some things at the auto parts store. James had a shrimp taco at Aliberto's and he said it was delicious. I had my two shredded beef tacos and beans and rice.

The blinker on my car isn't working because some critter chewed the wires in two. James fixed the problem but now he can't roll the windows down in my car from the driver's side.

James and I read from our boo, "Lady in Disguise," and watched a new Hallmark movie, "Sand, Sun, Romance" starring Paul Campbell.

*Helaman said that his warriors "did obey and observe to perform every word of command with exactness" (Alma 57:21).
President Russell M. Nelson said: "You will encounter people who pick which commandments they will keep and ignore others that they choose to break. I call this the cafeteria approach to obedience. This practice of picking and choosing will not work. It will lead to misery. To prepare to meet God,, one keeps all of His commandments. It takes faith to obey them, and keeping His commandments will strengthen that faith" ("Face the Future with Faith," Ensign, May 2011, 34).

Elder Joaquin E. Costa
"Every decision I have made in my life since then has been influenced by that moment when I humbled myself and prayed for forgiveness, and the Atonement of Jesus Christ on my behalf became part of my life."

Happy Birthday Addy

This girl became a teenager today.
She is Amazing Addy and she is
wearing a Miraculous Lady Bug T-shirt.

Owen and Donna Peeler will be taking our shift at the temple on September 9th, when we are gone to San Antonio.

I visited Hailey today as her visiting teacher and took her a basket of fruit. She and Huntleigh were the only ones at home. For the first time Huntleigh was very friendly to me. Hailey is packing. They sold their ranch and they are moving to Deming, New Mexico. The deal closes on November 1st.

I also took Taylor, Hailey's daughter, a triple combination with my testimony in it. Taylor is in my Primary class but she does not attend. As I was driving to Hailey's I told myself the most important thing I could do was have prayer with her. Once I got there, I totally forgot. I am not a very good visiting teacher!

I hit a rock pretty hard on Hailey's road. Luckily my tire didn't go flat. The ride home was pretty miserable because my knee hurt so badly. As soon as I got home I ate a tamale for lunch, the last one, and took two Tramadol and sat down to watch a Hallmark movie.

Eventually I started working on my blog and I also made a batch of brownies. Those two things go together well. I also like to watch Hallmark movies while I am blogging.

James is so frustrated with his tractor. He drove it to the front so he could load it on the trailer to take to the valley when we go on Wednesday. He wants to trade it in at Bingham Equipment. Today it wouldn't start and also the lights on James's trailer don't work after Chuck and Owen borrowed it. He is very discouraged.

For FHE he and Brother Westbrook went to meet the Wilhelm's at the new house they are building. James gave a lesson on the Word of Wisdom and took the brownies I made. It was a nice evening for everyone. I stayed home.

Dallas, Texas
30th operating temple
Dedicated: 19 Oct 1984 by: Gordon B. Hinckley

Atonement
DC 19:16
For behold, I, God, have suffered these things for all, that they might not suffer if they would repent;
Jesus Christ, Antemortal Existence of
Ephesians 1:4
According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:
Alma 57:1-16
How do I fortify myself against the attacks of the adversary?
Our bishop gave a brief message today on obedience. He quoted President Benson: "When obedience ceases to be an irritant and becomes our quest, in that moment God will endow us with power."
I guess I would say then that I strive to be obedient in all things so I can be armed with God's power. I have a ways to go, but that is my desire.
DC 124:50-69
What did I learn from these verses?
The Lord says that whenever He gives a commandment, no matter what it is about, to the children of man, and they go to with their might and endeavor to fulfill His commandment, and do that which is required of them, and they are prevented by their enemies, or any other means, from accomplishing it, He does not require any more at their hands. He accepts of their offering.
General Conference
The Voice of Warning
Elder D. Todd Christofferson
"One observer noted, 'Jesus taught his followers to do as he did: to welcome everyone but also to teach about sin, since love demands warning people about what can hurt them.'"

Today the Umphresses spoke in sacrament meeting. There was a little time left at the end of the meeting so the bishop spoke to us about obedience. I am going to share again the quote he gave:
"When obedience ceases to be an irritant and becomes our quest, in that moment God will endow us with power." - Ezra Taft Benson
I found a talk today on obedience that I want to read. It is from the April 1998 General Conference by Elder Donald L. Staheli called, "Obedience - Life's Greatest Challenge."

My Primary class today consisted of: Colter, Curtis, Jace, Gracie, Bailey, and Ashten. Sister Kuffer's friend passed away and her funeral is on Tuesday. Sister Kuffer should be here next week to take her class. Bailey and Ashten are both in her class.

Houston is facing the worst flood disaster in U.S. History. They, and surrounding areas, have had around 50 inches of rain. I guess Kevin is surviving, and so is Jillie and her family.

The Houston temple had flooding on the first floor. Thank goodness that is all.

Thousands of homes are flooded with people trapped inside. The worst is yet to come. Residence heard conflicting stories as to whether to evacuate. Evacuation itself creates a nightmare. The news is urging people to stay at home. Millions are at risk. Airports are closed. 9 million people are under flash flood warning. I am grateful that our two Vernon boys and their wives got out. Kendall and his wife were at church today here in Vernon.

During sharing/singing time all of the teachers were in a teacher council meeting. Arizona and another little girl went out to go to the bathroom. Afterwards, Salena, the other girl who is staying at Nadine's ran home instead of going back in to Primary. I guess we are going to have to have hall monitors for Primary now.

I texted Sheri today and said we should go to the Carefree, Arizona tea room for her birthday. She agreed.

We spent a quiet, relaxing afternoon at home with no TV. We did go outside and read a couple of chapters from our book. We are still reading "A Lady in Disguise."

Manila, Philippines
29th operating temple
Dedicated: 25 Sept 1984 by: Gordon B. Hinckley

Alma 56:41-57
Would you go to battle, or make a sacrifice or do something hard, for what you believe in?
*Today dad and I reported for work at the Snowflake temple. We got up at 4:30 to leave by 5:40 to get to the temple at 6:30 in time to get dressed and ready for our shift which starts at 7.
We finished at 1, and we were both exhausted.
Sometimes doing the Lord's work is hard. We have to remember what He did for us and that makes it all worthwhile.
You meet some amazing people in the temple. My co-ordinator is 57 years old. She told me her story. Her husband died 12 years ago and she was called a s a temple worker one year after his death. She can't imagine her life without the temple. She has received blessings she never even imagined were possible.
There were three other new temple workers today who were set apart with us. To me,they are the real heroes. They remind me of the 2,000 stripling warriors.
Brother Somers is a return missionary of two months who drove from Flagstaff this morning. I was afraid to ask him what time he had to get up. He is looking for a job, going to school and still has time to serve in the temple.
Brother McClaws lives in Holbrook and just graduated from high school. He has been called to the Georgia, North Atlantic mission and leaves in October. He works 50 hours a week at his job. He got off at 2 am and was at the temple at 6:30 am to report for duty this morning.
Last but not least, Brother Eagar who just graduated from Blue Ridge high school and has been called to the Indiana, Indianapolis mission and leaves October 3rd. He's a football player and a cowboy, and is very sweet, and good looking too. he just got his endowments yesterday and today he's a temple worker, working two shifts a week. A real hero dedicated to the Lord.
This is going to be an amazing calling! I am so grateful to be doing the Lord's work and I am so grateful to associate with such amazing people!
Who do you know that does amazing, hard things that has inspired you?
DC 124:31-49
Why are we commanded to build temples?
*Verses 4&5, "verily I say unto you, let this house be built unto my name, that I may reveal mine ordinances therein unto my people; For I deign to reveal unto my church things which have been kept hid from before the foundation of the world, things that pertain to the dispensation of the fulness of times."
General Conference
Perfect Love Casteth Out Fear
President Dieter F. Uchtdorf
"Do we live in a time of peril and turmoil? Of course we do. God Himself has said, 'In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.' (John 16:33). Can we exercise the faith to believe and to act accordingly. Can we live up to our commitments and sacred covenants? Can we keep the commandments of God even in challenging circumstances? Of course we can! We can because God has promised, 'All things shall work together for your good, if you walk uprightly.' Therefore, let us set aside our fears and live instead with joy, humility, hope and a bold confidence that the Lord is with us."

Our shift at the Snowflake temple started at 7 am. Prayer meeting in the endowment room. After prayer meeting we were set apart in the president's office by President Miller and Brother Coltrin. James actually joined them during my setting apart. Sister Winhardt and I made a connection as we walked down to a sealing room to view a video for all new temple workers. Eb Lewis, who was my bishop and stake president when I was growing up in Show Low is her uncle. Her dad is Don Lewis. She also knows Marva Maxwell McClintock who is one of my grandpa's sisters.
After the video the men went with Brother Coltrin and Sister Winhardt gave me a temple tour. Our first stop was the celestial room. There was one sister in the celestial room. Sister Winhardt told me there always has to be at least one person in the celestial room and if I am assigned to be there it is important that I come on time. The schedules are set up with changing assignments every 30 minutes. The only exception is if you are assigned to do a session, which I am today.
Next stop was the initiatory where I was shown how to check out the study cards. Everyone is expected to memorize the ordinances. The initiatory ordinances have the most to memorize. I was shown where I could go to study. These study cards cannot be taken from the temple. You study alone and you are not allowed to take notes.
We went downstairs to the baptistry. There is a picture of the Savior with two small children. Sister Winhardt said how much she loved this picture and the little girl on the right reminded her of her granddaughter. I ask her if she knew the Lambson's in St. Johns, she lives in St. Johns, and she said yes that she was Kyra Lambson's visiting teacher before she passed away. I told her the same little girl in the picture reminded me of Kyra's daughters. She agreed.

All of the new temple workers were assigned to go to the 9:30 session. This was about the only time I got to see James. President Miller said when he and his wife were called as temple workers they were excited to be spending time together. Even though they were called together they didn't get to work together very much and he says that is true of all husband and wife temple workers.
We did go in the office together and give our names to Brother Hatch who engraved our name tags for us.

Names on the prayer roll: James, Karen (Sister Winhardt told us too), Joe, Alex, James Hayden, Anna, Emmy, Jared, Dallin, Michael.

After the session I went down to the kitchen to grab a bite. Everyone brings potluck. I have 1/4 of an egg salad sandwich and headed back up to study the initiatory ordinances. As I was checking out a paper, the sister in charge at initiatory told me they needed me to work. I reminded her that this was my first day. She said it didn't matter, I could read from the paper. I was assigned the anointing and I guess I did okay. One of the sisters said I did fine and another said I needed to slow down a little. There is a way of doing everything, even opening the curtains which is done by touching them with the back of your hand, not the front.
By this time I am pretty exhausted. I have one last assignment, assigning lockers to people as they come in. I also have to go through and check all of the lockers to make sure no one has left anything. As I was assigning lockers my dear friend from Chandler who now lives in Snowflake came in from doing a session. We hugged and talked for a few minutes. Oh the people you meet.

Others I made a connection with while serving: Gracie Jones who was Gracie Peterson in high school. She came up to me and asked if I knew Terral Lambson. She remembered him. She also remembered James and Gerald Hatch being good friends and being on the wrestling team together. Claudia Crandall who now has a different last name. She was from Heber. Ron Solomon, Bill Solomon's brother. Darolyn DeWitt was another worker who was especially nice. Sister Farr from Holbrook is fairly new. I identified with her because of that and also because she showed me where the fans were. I needed one!

Our shift ended at one o'clock. We were both pretty wiped out. We stopped at Sonic for some refreshments on the way home and get behind Brother Eagar in the line. He waves at us.

Can you tell how tired we are.

I read from "A Lady in Disguise" until we got to Show Low. James needed something at Home Depot so I went in to Walmart. When I was finished I texted him to pick me up. I called but his phone went straight to voicemail. I was a bit angry and frustrated when I finally contacted him. I could tell that I hurt his feelings and it made me feel horrible. How could I act this way after spending most of the day in the temple? I have a lot to learn. I spent the rest of the day apologizing and trying to be extra kind.

This evening I worked on my Primary lesson. James is not teaching tomorrow so he did some reading. The clouds and rain we got were unexpected but very much appreciated!

When have you had to stand up for something you believe in?
*Once I was asked to not pray or meditate for a month as part of a training exercise for an online position. I told my leader I could not do that and ask to get my money back and withdraw my name from the program. Can you imagine not praying for a month?

What can we do to make our homes a place that Christ may come and dwell?
*melanieryerse:"I remember seeing an ad that said something like this - 'put good in, get good out!' If it is our goal to be good and we want our kids to be good as well, we need to put good in our homes. These good things include daily scriptures as a family, couple and individuals, prayers, family time, working together, forgiveness, kindness, service, wholesome media choices, keeping the commandments, etc.

The Godhead and the Plan of Salvation
Elder Dallin H. Oaks
"Because we have the truth about the Godhead and our relationship to Them, the purpose of life, and the nature of our eternal destiny, we have the ultimate road map and assurance for our journey through mortality."

I worked on my Primary lesson today and read lesson 17 in the Gordon B. Hinckley manual, "The Power of the Book of Mormon.

Today was a day of anticipation. Tomorrow we start as temple workers in the Snowflake temple. I must say, I am a little nervous.
My co-ordinator, Sister Winhardt called and said she looked forward to meeting me. James's co-ordinator, Brother Coltrin called and said we would have an opportunity tomorrow morning at 7 to introduce ourselves during prayer meeting. That made me even more nervous.

I did a little research and discovered that out of the 157 dedicated temples, President Hinckley dedicated 84 of them. That is amazing!

We went to bed early this evening with a plan to get up around 4:30 since we need to leave for the temple around 5:30. No TV tonight!
