"God's Love: The Most Joyous To The Soul"
Susan H. Porter
First Counselor in the Primary General Presidency
Sometimes we mistakenly think that we can feel God's love only after we have followed the iron rod and partake of the fruit. God's love, however, not only is received by those who come to the tree but is the very power that motivates us to seek that tree.
"Wherefore, it is the most desirable above all things," Nephi taught, and the angel exclaimed, "Yea, and the most joyous to the soul."
Prayer Day 7
I got up at 3:30 this morning. We left for the valley around 5:15. We stopped in Payson for a potty break, and then we headed on our way. We arrived at the church building on Dobson and Galveston at 8:30, thirty minutes before the meeting starts. Enough time for James to make a trip to the bathroom, and me too.
I wear a mask in because I know that Laura and Cathi are going to be there with their masks on. Sheri asks me why I have a mask on and I take it off. Peer pressure. Ben and Brother Braddock blessed the sacrament and Evan passed. He was the one who passed to us.
Erik Lambson was sustained as a high councilor at the beginning of the meeting. Our friend Ernesto Jiminez conducted the meeting. Bishop Blaser is the bishop.
Sheri's neighbor, Brother John Platt and his son Mitch were the speakers in sacrament meeting. Brother Platt is a member of the high council. Mitch is a returned missionary. He spoke about self-mastery. He said self-mastery is less about self and more about the Master.
M. Russell Ballard said: "One of the most important things we can learn in this life is how to emphasize our eternal spiritual nature and control our evil desires."
President James E. Faust said that self-mastery is the ultimate test of our character. "Be strong and of a good courage." We must seek to become more like our Savior. He said, "What ye have seen me do, that shall ye also do." Seek to know Jesus.
"For the Beauty of the Earth"
Brother John Platt: Be perfect . . . become, it's a process and is only possible through the Savior's Atonement. Larry R. Lawrence, "What Lack I yet?" Marvin J. Ashton said that living a righteous life is a shield and a protection. Many are shackled by poor habits. Shaking off chains requires action. See 2 Nephi 1:13. Elder Lawrence: "If we are humble and teachable, the Holy Ghost will prompt us to improve and lead us home, but we need to ask the Lord for directions along the way." Pray, Listen, and Act on changes needed. Change environment (In my case, get rid of junk food). Things you think about are bound to happen. Control your thoughts. Let weak things become strong.
I feel like I was supposed to be here today to hear these talks. Self-mastery is one of my main goals for this year.
Sheri and I went to Relief Society but Cathi and Laura did not. I texted them later and told them I missed them. Cathi said Terry was sick and she wanted to get home to check on him. Cathi was Laura's ride. Dave was visiting another ward for their ward conference.
Jen Coffey conducted Relief Society and made me feel very welcome. She said it was like me coming home again. Sister Bader taught the lesson. The last time I was here she was the teacher. The conference talk was President Nelson's talk, "The Temple and Your Spiritual Foundation." Gerri Price and I were the two temple workers in the class and we both shared things we have learned by being in the temple. It was a good class and I enjoyed it. Diana Dowdle and Hilary Jiminez were in the class. Most of the other sisters I did not know.
After the class Sheri and I walked over to the bishops office for Evan's ordination. I passed Lynda and Ernie Cull who had just finished teaching Primary and spoke to them.
Kim and Brian came and Brian participated in Evan's ordination along with Ben and Bishop Blaser. James performed the ordination and at one point he called Evan Ben. In spite of this it was a good ordination with lots of promised and blessings attached according to Evan's faithfulness. Evan will be the only active Priest in the ward. Bishop Blaser is a great bishop. He went to visit Max in the hospital and he gave Max a key to the building so he could come in and play basketball. I don't know very many bishops who would do that.
After the ordination James and I went to Sheri's for lunch. Sheri gave James three choices, roast pork, steak or homemade salsa and cheese crisps. He chose the last one. He has a hard time eating meat any more.
After lunch we relaxed on the couch and Sheri put the British Home Cooking Show on. Mary Berry is one of the judges. James took a little nap and then decided it was time to head to Darrel and Trina's.
Darrel is at work and the kids and Trina are gone somewhere. They arrived home a few minutes after we got there. They had been out exploring by Tortilla Flat. As soon as they get home Addy starts making a dessert. They are having a family dinner at Bryce's house and Trina's family is in charge of the desserts. Trina makes a fresh homemade strawberry pie. She left us a piece. It was delicious. Addy's dessert didn't turn out the way she wanted to. She was embarrassed because of how it looked so they didn't take it. Addy mixed up some brownies and they took them to cook at Brice's.
James and I both take naps upstairs in Rowan's room and then we go back downstairs when Darrel gets home. He brought the Covid test kit I asked for and I am so happy. When I asked him how much it was he said it was free. I know they cost at least $25. Maybe Darrel gets them for free for his family. He said they were all gone by Saturday morning. This one is for Ty Applegate who will be leaving for the MTC in Provo in a week. Trina and the kids were back too and they were all, including Darrel, eating ice cream from Frost. They went last night and saved the ice cream for tonight. Trina said they saw Sister Joy D. Jones, formerly the Primary General President there. I guess they have a winter home somewhere in the valley. Trina is friends with her daughter.
Trina told us how amazing Brice's house is and some of the special things he has done to make it kid friendly. It sounds like a fun place.
The entire family read from the scriptures about Adam and Eve and had family prayer before going to bed.
