First Counselor in the Relief Society General Presidency
At President Nelson's direction, I am reporting back to you about how The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is responding to hurricanes, earthquakes, refugee displacement - and even a pandemic - thanks to the kindness of the Latter-day Saints and many friends. While the more than 1,500 COVID-19 projects were certainly the largest focus of the Church's relief over the last 18 months, the Church also responded to 933 natural disasters and refugee crises in 108 countries. But statistics don't tell the whole story. Let me share four brief examples to illustrate the smallest taste of what is being done.

"The Greatest Possession"
Elder Jeffrey R. Holland
We left for town around 8:45 dropping off three bags of canned goods at the church for Paula Johnson to pick up and use as part of the Vernon Community Food Bank. She said the food truck was very low on food because contributions are down and asked if any of us could donate canned goods. I went in and cleaned out some cans of food from our pantry. Hopefully it will help.
I went in with James, at his request, to the Outpatient Surgery center adjacent to the hospital, where he is having his colonoscopy. James got all checked in and gave them my name as the person to contact when he was in recovery. As soon as he was called back I said goodbye and I left.
I drove over to Walmart and got out of my car and walked into the store with snow sticking to my clothes and glasses.
The main reason I am shopping is to get some ice cream for Sheri's ice cream cake. She is coming up this weekend and Sunday is her birthday. She says she doesn't want any more pie because she ate the entire pie I brought to her. She says she needs to "calm down." I love that expression, calm down. When we calm down we are more apt to be in control.
I also am going to make chili this week so I brought my Wendy's chili recipe with me. I got shakes for both James and I and I also got him some blueberry, pomegranate, acai juice, which he requested.
It's still snowing as I put my groceries in the car although it is a wet snow and not sticking to the ground. After loading the groceries in the back of the car, I looked at my phone as I got in the driver's seat.
There was a call I missed from a 928 area code. I immediately returned the call and spoke to a nurse at the hospital who told me James was in recovery and directed me where to park when I got to the hospital.
As I got to the hospital I rang the bell and told the nurse I was there to pick up my husband, James Lambson. I was led back to cubby 9
where James was in bed drinking a small box of cranberry juice and there was either a nurse or PA attending him. This nurse, I will call him, gave us a report of what they found during the procedure. Some polyps in the colon which they did a biopsy on. We should be getting the report sometime this week. He then proceeded to tell us about the reason for James's internal bleeding. Near his rectum is a rupture from the radiation treatment. It needs to be cauterized with a laser. The hospital has to order the laser from another hospital. When the doctor calls with the biopsy on this area, James needs to schedule another colonoscopy where this laser procedure can be done. Am glad I was there because when we talked about this later, James didn't remember anything.
James had not eaten for about 40 hours or since Monday night and he was hungry. I tried to encourage him to go through a drive-thru but he had his heart set on LaCasita so that's where we went. I kept thinking about the ice cream I had in the back of the car but I didn't say anything. James got what he always gets, a green chili burro enchilada style with a side of refried beans. I got something I've never gotten here before, a green mixed chimichanga with guacamole and sour cream. It was very tasty and not too big. I ate it all and James ate all of his food too.
We drove home in a bit of a snowstorm but it was not sticking on the ground. I drove and did quite well. We did not stop to get the mail. Neither of us wanted to go in.
I told James to go in and lie down when we got hom and that I would bring in the groceries, which I did. I had wrapped the ice cream in three bags and tied them together tightly and immediately took the two bags of ice cream and put them in the freezer in the garage. I then proceeded to bring in all of the groceries and put them away. James was asleep on the bed when I finished. I went to my spot on the family room recliner and turned on the TV to watch an old Hallmark movie. I fell asleep and caught the end. When I got up it was almost 4:30 and I have a presidency meeting at 6:00. I did some walking and then got ready to go. The sun was shining through the kitchen window which will melt any snow on the ground. When I came home from my meeting it was snowing again and James said it was supposed to snow all night long. Yay!
Tamara, Kerri and I met and made some ministering changes. Ruth Wilhelm came in with the activity day girls and I did a quick ministering interview with her. Pierce was our priesthood. He sat out in his truck in the parking lot acting as our guard. We were finished with our meeting around 8:00. We did not finish with our ministering revamp but we got a good start. I found out that Joe and Corrina Westbrook moved to New Mexico and Lynda Van Haren, our organist, is moving to Pine.
I have several assignments. I am to speak to Cyndi Pronger, a new sister who is 60, and ask her if she would be a ministering sister and what kind of schedule would work for her. I am also supposed to talk to Tanna and see if she is interested in learning more about the gospel. I also need to speak with Corinna about Mary Minnard. We have not see Mary or her husband Christopher at church for a very long time. Corinna was her ministering sister. I am also supposed to check with Sandra Wilhelm who is Mary's ministering partner.
When I got home James was full of energy and positivity. He wanted to walk and listen to our new book, "The Slow March of Light."
I had several thousand steps to walk and only ended up getting 10,000 steps before it was time to go to bed. Some days are like that.
