-A respite from the temptations of the devil.

General Conference
Deep and Lasting Conversion to Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ
Elder Quentin L. Cook
"What do these adjustments mean for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints? We are confident that members will be blessed in extraordinary ways. Sunday can be a day of gospel learning and teaching at church and in the home. As individuals and families engage in family councils, family history, ministering, service, personal worship, and joyful family time, the Sabbath day will truly be a delight."

Patricia Heaton from "The Middle" and "Everybody Loves Raymond" spoke at the Rootstech conference in Salt Lake City today. She is all about family. She grew up in Cleveland, Ohio to a very Catholic family. Her grandmother had 15 children and was Catholic mother of the year one year and received a medal from the Pope. That medal is now a cherished family heirloom.

Thursday night there was a training session as part of Rootstech for family history leaders and consultants. James and I listened to it. There was a lot of talk about the family search phone app, family tree. It is amazing all of the knowledge and information we have at our finger tips in our phones. James calls them our Urim and Thummim's.

James and I also listened to the CEO of Ancestry tell of all the advances that Ancestry has made. I also listened to Elder and Sister Bednar speak. Elder Bednar told a neat story about some of his ancestors.

I went to the dump this afternoon with James. It was very windy. I was hoping we could skip the wind this year. We listened to our book, "Healing Hearts" on the way over to the dump and back.

We started our fast this afternoon. We are fasting that Stacy will get the job that she interviewed for yesterday, if it be the will of the Lord.  James said in the prayer, "that she will have the righteous desires of her heart."

This evening after finishing my walking I watched "Victoria" with James. There is only one more episode for this season.

Jesus Christ, Crucifixion
John 19:31
The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.
Book of Mormon
Helaman 8:11-28
* Why is it so imperative to have a contrite spirit when we look unto the Savior?
- So that we might live, even unto that life which is eternal. When my spirit is contrite I am teachable. I am able to change and grow. I am filled with gratitude as I realize all the savior has done for me and how dependent I am upon Him I am sad when I add to His suffering. He is my Rock and my Redeemer. Nephi's use of the story of the brazen serpent emphasizes that we should look upon the Son of God with faith and live. Through the atoning sacrifice of Christ, the poisonous venom of Satan was overcome for all who would repent.

Christ the Lord Is Risen Today
"Everything worthy and eternal is centered in the living reality of God, our loving Eternal Father, and His Son, Jesus Christ, and His Atonement, witnessed by the Holy Ghost. This is Easter Sunday. I reverently witness and solemnly testify of the living Christ - He who died, was buried, and rose again the third day, and ascended into heaven. He is Alpha and Omega - with us in the beginning, He is with us to the end."

I was up at 4 am and had a green smoothie and a slice of pumpkin bread. We left at 5:30 for the valley and drove straight to the Galveston building. On the way we listened to the new volume of Church History on my gospel library app.

Their meeting starts at nine and we were a few minutes early. We sat by Cathi, Terry, Dave, and Laura on the back row.

The Primary program was focused on "I Am a Child of God." Evan was one of the narrators. Here are some of the songs and scriptures that were shared: Romans 8:15; "Jesus Wants Me For a Sunbeam,"
"My Life is a Gift," Abraham 3:24-25; Children talk about the Creation; "My Heavenly Father Loves Me," First Article of Faith, Jesus Christ is our Savior; Joseph Smith's First Vision, the Restoration, Sixth Article of Faith, "I Belong to the Church of Jesus Christ," "The Priesthood is Restored," "We Thank Thee O God for a Prophet," 3 Nephi 20:2: "When I Am Baptized," Malachi Johns told about his baptism, families are part of Heavenly Father's plan, the family proclamation, "Families Can Be Together Forever," DC 112:10; "A Child's Prayer," Service, commandments, "If The Savior Stood Beside Me," "I'm Trying to Be Like Jesus."
It was a great program as they always are!

In Sunday School we had the same lesson as we did last week in Vernon so I worked on catching up on my Sunday journal. I studied lesson #38 "Thou Hast Done Wonderful Things" Isaiah 22; 24-26; 28-30. The purpose of this lesson is to help us come unto Christ through recognizing some of the wonderful things He has done.

Paula Casto taught the lesson in Relief Society. It was about The Worth of Souls. She had a chart listing all the wealthiest men in the world. Jeff, the creator and owner of Amazon was at the top. He is 54 years old and worth 112 billion dollars.
How does Heavenly Father determine the worth of His children?
"The Lord uses a scale very different from the world's to measure the worth of souls." - Dieter F. Uchtdorf
Story of Lilo and Stitch. Ohana is family and means no one gets left behind or forgotten. Ohana is a human circle of complete Aloha (unconditional love). Every person we meet is a VIP of our Heavenly Father.
How can we see others as God sees them? - We need to see "more" of people in order to love them as Heavenly Father loves them - We need to see all sides, the whole picture.
Alma 26:23-26. "How the Nephites Saw the Lamanites" - 1) Unrighteous traditions, 2) stiff-necked, 3) delighted in bloodshed, 4) wanted to destroy them so the Nephites wanted to get rid of them.
"How the Sons of Mosiah saw the Lamanites" - 1) Would not take up arms against their brethren, 2) they loved God, 3) they hated sin, 4) the sons of Mosiah loved the Lamanites.
*How does the way we view others affect how we minister to them?

After Church we went to Sheri's for lunch and to change our clothes. Ian makes some really good ribs.
After lunch we walked down to Cathi's. Sheri wanted me to take Ollie but he wouldn't go with me so she had to take him down. He loves to go to Cathi's.
Cathi helped James and I make a card for his mom for her birthday. This is how it turned out:

James hand-drew the stems on the flowers
Cathi came to the rescue again, providing all the
materials, including the polka-dot embossing sleeve.

Cathi, Terry, Dave, and Laura, are all losing weight on the keto diet.

James and I were both exhausted after finishing our card. We said
goodbye and left for Darrel and Trina's where James took a long nap and I played with Lola.

I unpacked the order I got from Stampin' Up. Cathi is my distributor and I had my order sent to her house. Trina had to help me figure out how to make the flower punch usable. Lola and Ruby made some flowers and we basically just made an arts and crafts mess on the kitchen table.

We had to push the button on the bottom
for this to pop up so you could get your paper in.

Lola and I drew these in my planning
notebook. She drew my heads and I drew
hers, except for the bottom row which I did.

Trina made a pumpkin cake with chocolate chips, scrambled eggs with veggies, and biscuits and bacon for dinner. Darrel got home from work just in time to help. They invited us to eat with them but I was not hungry.

After dinner we had FHE and family scriptures and family prayer.
Trina showed a video about a Christian organization that sends Christmas boxes to children in needy countries and then she asked her kids if they would all like to send a Christmas box to a need y child? Of course they said yes.

The boxes are the size of a shoe box. The kids weren't sure what they could send. We suggested sandals, toothbrush, toothpaste, a small toy, soap, and a pencil and some paper. Rowan was trying to fold his blanket to see if it would fit in a shoebox but it didn't.

It was an enjoyable evening spent with family.

Playful but no fights.

What should I pray for?
Bible Dictionary, "Prayer," paragrah #4
It was the custom to pray three times a day, as David (Ps.55:17), Daniel (Dan.6:10), and the later Jews. Prayer was said before meat ( 1 Sam.9:13; Matt. 15:36; Acts 27:35).
Jesus Christ betrayal of
Matthew 17:22
And while they abode in Galilee, Jesus said unto them, The Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of men:
Book of Mormon
Mosiah 10:1-22
*What happens if traditions are based on things that aren't true?
- Unwanted traditions are those which lead us away from performing holy ordinances and keeping sacred covenants. Our guide should be the doctrine taught by the scriptures and the prophets. Traditions which devalue marriage and family, abase women or do not recognize the majesty of their divine nature and God-given roles, or honor temporal success more than spiritual, or teach that reliance upon God is a weakness of character, all lead us away from eternal truths.
Old Testament
Judges 9-11
9 Gideon's son Abimelech is made king - He slays his seventy brothers - Jotham tells a fable of trees choosing a king - The Shechemites conspire against Abimelech - He is slain at Thebez.
10 Tola and then Jair judge Israel - The children of Israel worship false gods, are forsaken by the Lord, and are distressed by their enemies - They repent and ask the Lord for deliverance.
11 Jephthah is chosen as the captain of the armies of Israel - The Ammonites assail Israel in war - Jephthah is guided by the Spirit and defeats Ammon with a great slaughter - He makes a rash vow, which leads to the sacrifice of his only daughter.

Pure Love: The True Sign of Every True Disciple of Jesus Christ
Elder Massimo De Feo
" The gospel of Jesus Christ is centered on the love of the Father and the Savior for us and our love for Them and for one another."

Along with reading the Old Testament I am reading the BYU Old Testament Student Manual. It says this about this period of time, the time of the Judges, in the Israelites history:
"After this, the Israelites grew effeminate as to fighting any more against their enemies, but applied themselves to the cultivation of the land, which producing them great plenty and riches, they neglected the regular disposition of the settlement, and indulged themselves in luxury and pleasures; nor were they any longer careful to hear the laws that belong to their political government: whereupon God was provoked to anger, and put them in mind, first, how, contrary to His directions, they had spared the Canaanites: and, after that, how those Canaanites, as opportunity served, used them very barbarously.
Extraordinary courage was required for an Israelite to be devoted to the Lord during this ear. Unfortunately, this situation arose not because of pressure from outside of Israel but because of pressure from within. Gideon's neighbors, not a group of pagan Canaanites, were worked into a murderous frenzy when Gideon destroyed the altar of Baal. Jotham's prophecy was uttered against his own brother, not against some Philistine king. Indeed, Israel's problem did not stem from the pagan masses they faced. It lay within their own hearts. Their greatest enemies were not the power-hungry Midianites or Moabites but inward vacillation, apathy, disobedience, and rebellion. Their outward enemies raged through them constantly only because the inward weaknesses raged unchecked also.
The Canaanites and Philistines are gone today. But are not the offspring of their gods, metamorphosed into modern form and made intellectually acceptable, still with us And what of apathy, disobedience, vacillation, and rebellion? Is not our greatest enemy within? If so, then the same kind of courage displayed by the people of whom you have just read is as necessary now as it was then."

Ensign reading: Freedom or Captivity - "sometimes the wrong path looks more interesting. We have to remember our ultimate goal, or we'll lose the destination we are seeking." (p. 56)

I read a conference talk that Jared recommended: "Waiting Upon the Lord: Thy Will Be Done" Elder Robert D. Hales, October 2011 GC.
"The purpose of our life on earth...is to grow, and develop, and be strengthened through our own experiences."
This was a great talk. Thank you Jared for recommending it.

President Nelson, Sister Nelson and the Holland's continue their tour:
Tuesday, April 17, Harare, Zimbabwe
"Meetings will be held with missionaries and member in Zimbabwe. A devotional will be broadcast to all Latter-day Saint congregations in that African country.
Nearly 30,000 Latter-day Saints call Zimbabwe home. Missionary work began in what was then Southern Rhodesia in the early 1930's.

At 11:30 today I met Denise, her mom Peg, and Vickie at Licano's in Show Low for lunch. Everyone else had chicken tacos and I had a chicken enchilada with green sauce. It was quite delicious. Vickie ended up buying it for me. Thanks Vickie!

We visited awhile and then we walked up the hill to Aunt Gene's house. She lives in grandma and grandpa's old house behind Licano's. We were an hour early and caught her without her wig on, watching the news on television. We visited a few minutes and she said we were going to have a party and excused herself to put on her wig. We all helped get the muffins and the hot chocolate and miniature marshmallows on the table. She even used her china plates. We took pictures, ate, and laughed, while Aunt Gene told us funny stories about growing up in Lakeside and Show Low. Once she and some friends ditched the last part of the school day. It was her idea. She said if they walked up Springer Hill which was covered with snow backwards, the truant officer would never find them. Well he did find them as they were trying to build a fire to keep warm. What was the truant officers name? Arlee Maxwell, Aunt Gene's dad!

Another time in high school she and a group of friends were in Snowflake and decided to steal some of the Neff family's chickens. (James and I work with some Neff's in the temple.) They stole the chickens, killed them by popping their heads, which Aunt Gene demonstrated, and then decided not to cook them that night. They took them to Aunt Gene's family's restaurant, the Show Low Cafe, and put them in the refrigerator with the idea they would go back the next day and cook them. Aunt Gene had to get up early in the morning, 6 a.m., to open the cafe with her dad, my grandpa. They heard a knock on the door and their stood a police officer. Aunt Gene said: "Darn, someone snitched on us!"

Aunt Gene talked about her 90th birthday party and how all of her grandchildren were there except Emmy, Rita's daughter who lives in Texas and one other of Randy's kids. She said even Rita's son Rusty, who works in Washington D.C. on the Foreign Affairs Committee was there.

Aunt Gene is excited to be going with Gary in May to his son Max's graduation from Harvard. She is also happy that Senator Jeff Flake is the keynote speaker. She said, "His dad Glenn was one of my first boyfriends!" The Flake family is from Snowflake.

 Aunt Gene, Denise, Vickie, Me

(Peg and I were roommates when I went to
New York with Dennis and Denise. I love her!)

Denise, Aunt Gene, Me, Peg

You will notice how Denise has the seat closest to Aunt Gene. They
absolutely love each other. Those were poppy seed muffins and were very good although I only ate half of mine.

Randy, my cousin and Aunt Gene's son, says his mom plays bridge in Pinetop on Thursdays and they warn everybody between Show Low and Pinetop that she's on the road. She has a beautiful new cadillac that she drives. How many 90 year olds still drive?

I am so grateful for my Aunt Gene's life. She is my oldest living relative. I told her I would be back to hear more of her stories.

I went to Walmart to pick up a few items and then to The Book Barn to get my Primary boy Amaron some scriptures and a scripture cover. This is the cover I got:

He asked me if I would buy him the kind
that are open and don't have a zipper but
they didn't have that kind for boys.

While at The Book Barn I spoke with Brother Rhoton, who is the stake clerk, about who he thought the next stake president was going to be. He said he didn't know but he was sad that President Shumway was being released. I told him I felt the same way.
He suggested Bishop Miller could be the next president. I told him I hoped he wasn't because he is a great bishop.

As I have been thinking about it I think Brother Greer would be a great stake president. He has been a mission president and he loves people!

As soon as I got home I took a quick rest on the recliner and then read to James from "Ashes on the Moor."

I listened to my 19th President Nelson talk. This was is from April 1993, "Honoring the Priesthood."
" Honoring the priesthood fosters respect, respect promotes reverence, and reverence invites revelation."

James wrote a check for $381 for federal income taxes. He said we would be getting $50 back from the state. The federal website is down so everyone was given a days extension on their taxes. They expect 14 million to request an even further extension.

Jesus Christ, Ascension of
3 Nephi 11:12
And it came to pass that when Jesus had spoken these words the whole multitude fell to the earth; for they remembered that it had been prophesied among them that Christ should show himself unto them after his ascension into heaven.
Book of Mormon
3 Nephi 24:1-25:6
*What blessings are promised to those who pay their tithing?
Those who live the law of tithing show their faith in God. Obedience to this law brings the blessings stated in 3 Nephi 24:10-12. Elder Jeffrey R. Holland shared five reasons why every member of the Church, in any kind of circumstance, should obey the law of tithiing: "I suggest five reasons why all of us, rich or poor, longtime member or newest convert, should faithfully pay our tithes and offerings. First, do so for the sake of your children. Teach your children that many of the blessings of the Church are available to them because you and they give tithes and offerings to the Church. Second, pay your tithing to rightfully claim the blessings promised those who do so. Third, pay your tithing as a declaration that possession of material goods and the accumulation of worldly wealth are not the uppermost goals of your existence. Fourth, pay your tithing and offerings out of honesty and integrity because they are Gods rightful due. this leads to a fifth reason to pay our tithing and offerings. We should pay them as a personal expression of love to a generous and merciful Father in Heaven. through His grace, God has dealt bread to the hungry and clothing to the poor. At various times in our lives, that will include all of us, either temporally or spiritually" (Ensign, Nov 2001, 33-35)
Doctrine Covenants Favorite Scriptures
DC 4:4-5
4 For behold the field is white already to harvest; and lo, he that thrusteth in his sickle with his might, the same layeth up in store that he perisheth not, but bringeth salvation to his soul;
5 And faith, hope, charity and love, with an eye single to the glory of God, qualify him for the work.
General Conference
Spiritual Eclipse
Elder Gary E. Stevenson
"In the same manner that the very small moon can block the magnificent sun, extinguishing it's light and warmth, a spiritual eclipse can occur when we allow minor and troublesome obstructions - those we face in our daily lives - to get so close that they block out the magnitude, brightness and warmth of the light of Jesus Christ and His gospel. Elder Neal A. Maxwell took this analogy even further when he stated: 'Even something as small as a man's thumb, when held very near the eye, can blind him to the very large sum. Yet the sun is still there. Blindness is brought upon the man by himself. When we draw other things too close, placing them first, we obscure our vision of heaven.'"

We left for the valley a little after 8 a.m. James was driving the truck and pulling a 22 foot long trailer. We stopped to get gas and then our next stop was Burger House in Miami. We each had a burro, and we bought two extras to take to Sheri. My appointment with Chandler Eyecare was at noon and I arrived right on time. James dropped me off and then went to Bill's to park the trailer.
My left eye needs a little more correction so I got a new prescription. It is always fun to see Sheri and friends Nancy, Rachel and Chris at work. Sheri gets off at one for lunch so we met James at Cafe Rio. Sheri took this photo of us and I was going to take one of her and James outside but I forgot.

 Boy I look old!

After lunch Sheri had to go back to work and James had to go see Dr. Hatch about doing a remodeling job at his dental office. While James was meeting with Dr. Hatch I took the truck and drove down to the Albertson's and did some walking. When James called I went back and picked him up. We drove to the Costco in Gilbert and bought some Alpine Valley bread, James's favorite, and 11 blankets for grandkids for Christmas. If they don't get anything else from us they will get a new blanket.

Next stop, Deseret Book, which is right next door. I bought 3 conference Ensigns for the sisters I visit teach. I actually only visit 2 sisters right now, Jean, and Pam but I bought an extra for Pam's husband Ricky. I bought a Book of Mormon and had my name engraved on it for next year's Book of Mormon study. I also bought two journals, one for Sunday and one for Shelly for her mission.

By this time it was 4:30 and time to go pick up Rowan who is going with Evan on his birthday date. Joshua and Max are going too but they are already at Evan's.

When we walked in to Trina and Darrel's Lola was sitting on the couch eating popcorn and watching Moana. When she saw us she said, "Oh they are probably picking me up." We visited a few minutes with Ruby and Lola, Addy was at a friends, and then the three of us left.

The boys had fun playing in the backyard with Ollie and we had to keep reminding them we were here to take them on a birthday date.

Rowan was a little afraid of Ollie because last time
he "chewed" on him. He would run and of course
Ollie would run after him.

Evan didn't want to go shopping like we normally do. He asked if we could go to the Xtreme Air on Rural and Ray. He had to give the location because there is one here on McQueen and Pecos just a couple of miles away but the boys like the Rural and Ray one better.
I dropped James and the boys off while I went across the street to Fry's Marketplace to get a few groceries. I bought some shakes, chicken, cranberry celebration, a fresh salad, and three ASU blankets. The three blankets are for Evan, Joshua, and Rowan. I am holding out for a Cardinal's blanket for Max.

After their hour at Xtreme Air the boys were hungry. Oh yes, so was James. He had been walking the whole time the boys were doing their activities.

Evan decided he wanted to go to the mall food court for dinner. He and Max went to Subway and Joshua and Rowan to the pizza place just like always. James brought in his chicken and cranberry celebration from Fry's. I am holding out for the fresh salad I got.
I did decide to go to Panera and get some cookies. I got six chocolate chip cookies which qualified me for six more free cookies. I got two snickerdoodles, two ginger molasses, and two frosted pumpkin sugar cookies.

We took Evan and Max home and then Joshua. Our ride to Rowan's gave us time to talk to him about school and what he is doing. He plays the cello and also plays soccer. We got to see Addy and Ruby and Trina when we got to the house. Lola was asleep. We visited a few minutes. I wanted to give the kids the cookies but Trina said no.

We stayed at Sheri's and slept downstairs in Alex's room. Roxy's cage is down there so of course I said hi. Sheri was already in bed when we got back.

Joe, Kim and Brian have been in Disneyland
this week. They came home today.
